#TTN Bern meetup, today we assembled a gateway, scouted for a good outdoor site, connected it to a network, learned about the length to frequency ratio of antennas, and just enjoyed some good company at Effinger.

We will meet again at the end June, most likely for another prep session catching some packets at the hackerspace, then it's off to the #Makerfaire 🎈#iot #community

Wir sind heute mit dem Fahrrad zum Geburtstagskaffee nach Siegburg gefahren. Begleitet hat uns ein #paxcounter auf #ttgo Basis.

Es ist erstaunlich, wie gut die Abdeckung in #lorawan inzwischen ist. Als #freifunkrheinsieg (FFRS) sind wir seit Jahren dabei, dass LoRaWAN #gateway Netz in der Region Rhein-Sieg aktiv auszubauen.

Mal eben das Lora-Gateway auf eine neue Plattform stellen, ist so gar nicht "mal eben". Die ganze Software rund um SX1302 ist einfach schrecklich. #LoraWAN #ttn #thethingsnetwork #lora #RaspberryPi #nerdkram

Hm. Ich hab im #homeassistant die #ttn integration drin und hab da (Leckage-)Sensoren, die nur alle 24h Daten schicken... Nach ner Weile sagt der HA, dass keine Daten verfügbar waren. Aktuell bei nem Sensor, der vor 22h was geschickt hat, der also in 2h wieder was schickt.
Mach ich was falsch? Ist ja nicht Sinn der Sache, dass ich das jetzt wie prä-HA über Node-Red in ne Influx schieb ums von dort abzuholen, oder?

Part of why LoRaWAN (like TTN & Helium) have better RF performance than meshtastic (and other lowcost LoRa meshes) is that LoRaWAN makes use of actual gateway chips which enable them to listen to 8 channels at once while meshtastic only uses one static channel at a time.

LoRaWAN gateways can then use intelligent scheduling modes (they call it device classes) to make super efficient use of the 8 channels and possible hop around noise channels too.

So the problems with the TTN is basically is a SaaS capitalist play. You buy a gateway, connect it to TTN then TTN sells access back to you and your community for your own hardware 🥴

They do give a free tier and act open but your hardware and data is THEIR profit center. Lame.

It's got a lot of network coverage in the EU, but never really took off in the US.

In practice the network in the EU is viable, the one in the US isn't.

- sich im Forum natürlich anmelden muss
- um dann festzustellen, dass man als newbie keine neuen topics posten darf

@drmikepj @gendor @libbymiller https://map.mpowered247.com/ seems to claim a fair bit of #meshtastic activity in Swansea, and some in Cardiff and Bristol. I don't know anything about it beyond the URL showing up in names of some of the nodes that mine has seen 😀

TBH I'm only playing with meshtastic over #TTN/#LoRaWAN because that's the only version of https://www.seeedstudio.com/SenseCAP-Card-Tracker-T1000-E-for-Meshtastic-p-5913.html on sale at the minute.

Still, it's nice to get a bit of a feel for it to compare with my TTN experience.

Thanks to an #opensouce event last WE, I've been to workshop yesterday and managed to sold my own meteo station powered by #arduino.
It only measures the temperature and humidity (for a start), but it transmits those metrics with its current GPS location on #lorawan.
It has joined the 26 others #citizenscience driven meteo stations monitoring the city of #tilburg: https://meetjestad.net/index3.php?loc=Tb

It's currently running lora_pkt_fwd connected to #TTN The Things Network.
