Barton Hall like you've never seen it -- since they haven't finished the new field hockey field they rolled out turf inside Barton! They had a game today but I missed it, not least because i didn't pack the right lens, but given that the bus broke down on the way home I should have been there!

Erosion is a real issue for , especially in Midvale Heights and can affect neighborhoods downhill like Nakoma. couldn’t help.

This land was sacred place for many Native Americans.

Volunteers helped to honor that & protect life from threats like erosion by planting native plants that existed on this continent (further south) before humans, which Native Americans know and have given names.

Floods during wet-snow events that are becoming more common. Forest floods and sinks, water crosses over and creates gulley. Tree roots and other plant roots prevent erosion damage. In the summer time, the floods are less severe. The photo here shows where the end of the mowed path connects to the Odana Golf Course path. The native wildflowers planted by volunteers near the highway bridge where there is a hill and bikes go very fast. This path was carved by settlers and used as railroad. Today it is a bike-path where people of all kinds stroll, walk, run, roller-blade, roller-ski, skateboard, and bike.

science is one important aspect of .

Besides golf-courses, roofs, and Dutch peat, lawns contribute a lot to turf management.

In the property of MG&E was mowed by previous home owners. To prevent more erosion only a row is mowed.

Volunteers in 2000’s planted native plants along bikepath instead of erosion-resistant turfgrass variety.

Broadleaf turf species are common in this low/no herbicide method. Tree shade prevents dandelions. Spring flowers: violets.

Row of grass mowed to prevent erosion seen in the depression near end of path. Erosion is from golf course parking lot rainwater. Erosion could affect communities downhill of this site. Turfgrass is a mix of multiple species. Since almost no herbicide has been applied to this site, many different species co-exist and change in frequency due to localized conditions. Native plant species planted by volunteers along nearby bike-path have seeded this relatively new un-mowed land. These plants have grown in this part of the United States for thousands of years, long after glaciers melted. The purple is Vernonia or Ironweed, it has very thick and strong roots. Even flowers, like Rudbeckia, in the way of the path, are respected.
