So, thanks to over-watering our monstera plant:

1. the leaves started to turn black
2. i said fuck it, went to Ali Express and bought some Zigbee plant soil moisture meters so we wouldn't do it again
3. Turns out they're #Tuya, and the versions I bought weren't supported by the year-old version of #Zigbee2mqtt that I'm running
4. So, to upgrade to a version that supports the sensors, I had to go from 1.3.9 to 2.3.0
5. Which was backward incompatible with my old settings, so I had to fix them up
6. And that changed the MQTT payloads sent from Z2M to #homeassistant so I had to change a bunch of automation triggers related to light switches and the TV that were written years ago and had all sorts of legacy shit that no longer works

Moral of the story: dont' over-water your plants.

Went to the chinese shop to buy some household and found this cheap #rgb #bluetooth bulb. It says #tuya compatible, so I wonder if it works with #homeassistant . Will try, in the worst case I'll be happy to destroy it to see what #mcu has inside and if it's #hackable / flashable. A lot of fun in any case 🤣

Geht sogar _DAS_ out of the box mit fertigteilen von ali... ;)

Tuya Zigbee Smart Scene button.
Tuya Zigbee Siren.

Taugt alles nichts.

I (tried to) set up a Tuya gateway and two PIR motion detectors. One fell down, I didn't mount it well enough.

Anyway…I have never gotten a motion alert, but I regularly get alerts telling me the one detector is offline. If I go look, I see motion events being recorded with time stamps…

Is getting useful alerts strictly a paid thing?

Tuya

In a neighboring office, there is a device (some kind of smart Tuya gadget based on the MAC) that keeps trying to connect to our WiFi router.

```
hostapd: phy1-ap0: STA d8:d6:68:... IEEE 802.11: authenticated
```
We have fired and disabled it.

(For some reasons not specified here, it is not an option to go over and ask them what it is.)

Is there anything we can do about this? How common is this sort of thing?

@estevez

I now use 3 of the #Ikea #INSPELNING smart plugs (beside some older #Osram and #Tuya ). One costs €10. And now they work fine with the latest version 2 of #zigbee2mqtt

What are some #ZigBee EU smart plugs with energy monitoring you can recommend? Except #Tuya and #Aqara

What about #3reality? Or maybe #Bosch?

A reminder that you should never, ever trust #IoT companies, unless they have a proven record of working with open standards and being developer-friendly.

A few weeks ago I did some renovation work in my bathroom, and I had a chance of upgrading my smart lights (from one single Hue bulb to 5 color spotlights).

Unfortunately, Hue wasn’t an option this time - we lowered the ceiling to fit the new pipes, and since Hue spotlights are quite bulgy installing them would have meant losing 3-4 more cm of ceiling height.

So after some quick research with the contractor we opted for a bunch of #Tuya lights, which were the only smart spotlights flat enough to fit into our space constraints.

Connecting them to Platypush was already painful. No ZigBee/Z-Wave/Bluetooth. Each of those lights is basically an embedded Linux system that communicates over WiFi with its own proprietary protocol, and with the mobile app acting as a virtual bridge (what a waste of computing power, IP addresses and cognitive burden of learning a new protocol for something that has already been solved many times over by ZigBee). There is a way of communicating directly to the device over WiFi, but it’s mainly thanks to reverse engineering efforts whose mileage may vary (depending on model and firmware version). And those usually require a Tuya API key (something that I haven’t yet managed to put my hands on, because their developer website is slow, buggy and prone to sudden crashes, and getting a developer account involves jumping through lots of bureaucratic hurdles being a Chinese-owned company).

So I’ve resorted to a workaround - at least these lights work with Google Assistant, so I’m sending text queries to the assistant over the old API whenever I want to control them. Suboptimal, slow (1-2 secs before the lights change state), but at least it works.

Now this.

If I want to keep using the smart features of the lights that I’ve regularly purchased, I need to pay for a subscription. Why? And why wasn’t this made clear in big capital letters on the product description as well - like this product has a trial period of 30 days and then it requires a subscription to keep functioning?

Luckily it seems that the subscription is required only for business accounts (not sure how they’re going to enforce it or even check it though). But I know that in this kind of business models things are always one step away from a shitty PM taking aggressive “revenue stream decisions”, and pushing a software update to all lights that requires a paid subscription from everyone. And customers have no way of knowing that in advance - except when one morning they enter the bathroom to brush their teeth before work, and the lights suddenly don’t work anymore.

Email from Tuya informing of the end of the trial period for their IoT products and asking to subscribe.

I want a button(not a socket) to turn a light on/off.

1. It needs to be wired (USB C ideally).
2. It needs to NOT be zigbee or Tuya.
3. It needs to be fully compatible with Home Assistant so this rules out TPLink/Tapo
4. It needs to not have a separate hub but I could maybe compromise on this if needs be...
5. It needs to be < £20

Think ESP based hardware in a case w/ USB plug and a user switch..

Any suggestions/ideas?
