OK #Linux folk - I am in the process of seeing if I can transition to fulltime Linux creative use, but am encountering some issues. I've installed #UbuntuStudio 24.04.2 LTS on my PC (Intel with 2080ti GPU video and 32GB memory) and the overall interaction feels very laggy. There's a 250-500ms gap between my moving the mouse and actions. This is frustrating in #BitwigStudio when parameters jump about, but it is pretty much everywhere. Anyone have some pointers to share?

@amadeus I am actively moving away from anything iLok. The more I dig about in Bitwig, the more I find it can do nearly everything I want (if not more than what I expected).

I am also impressed that testing #UbuntuStudio on an older PC has resulted in zero crackling of audio output (#Ardour )whereas under Windows 10 it is nearly unusable for the noise.

@fedops in prior plasma desktops, Compositor was a necessary option in settings to set off when running on an rpi4; the setting no longer exists by i found not to load it on startup, so my display is a bit abrupt now, but snappy. This is old hardware, gt-105 or something like that.

It could be dropping the override was enough, so I may try enabling compositor later.

This #ubuntustudio laptop was victim of the 25.04 #kubuntucrisis so all sorts of things are just broken.

I just solved one very weird problem I encountered working with #Mixbus + #X11

I couldn't open new windows on my #UbuntuStudio #Linux 24.04. Not any.

Then I restarted the box and Mixbus and it wouldn't run no more. Full panic mode. Production URGENT.

What to do? As always: Restart again, open console window, start Mixbus from the command line and watch for debug output. And there it was:

„Maximum number of clients reached“

Or, to translate: Uh, you got too many windows on your system, hidden or shown, I'm giving up.

My recording project had grown by one channel, and thus by three more plugin windows.

The default client limit is 256 in X11. #xrestop shows I need 268 clients. Without Mixbus I was at 180 clients already.

Solution 1: Set max to 2048. https://forums.opensuse.org/t/how-to-increase-maximum-number-of-clients/170209/3

Solution 2: Mixbus has the (defaulted?) option to close / destroy plugin windows instead of hiding them. But this may have other implications, especially when running Windows #VST on Linux.

Recently a friend of mine got a new #Windows PC for running #Cubase on it. He installed his previously used software, namely Cubase and #Voxengo audio plugins on the new box.

When he opened a Cubase project he had copied from his old PC, none of the plugins in that project were detected any more. Even though he had them installed. So he had to open the project on the old machine, write all plugin settings down to paper, re-insert the very same plugins on the new machine into the very same project and restore the settings from his notes.

I just copied an #Ardour project from #OSX to #UbuntuStudio #Linux. I use some Windows #Voxengo plugins on Linux via #LinVST, while I use native Voxengo binaries on OS X.

The Ardour project created on OS X plays on Linux out of the box, using all plugins (given they are installed).

Just one of these many details in how your #DAW does certain things.

Das #MacBook von 2017 ist bei weitem nicht überfordert mit der Aufgabe, fängt aber bereits bei 5 bis 10% Systemauslastung unglaublich an zu pusten, sodass man eigentlich in einen anderen Raum damit muss. #Apple, so gefeiert, ich kann's immer noch nicht nachvollziehen.

Einsatzgrund: #RME #TotalMix für das #Fireface400 ist einfach so viel besser als #ffadomixer unter #UbuntuStudio #Linux. Letzterer wäre auf meinem #Thinkpad verfügbar und würde auch mit diesem Interface funktionieren.

#Ardour bleibt Ardour, auch auf #OSX.

Need a bit of #linuxhelp I've just installed Ubuntu Studio 25.04 beta on an system. Steam is doing two strange things:
1: It only opens properly when launched from the terminal. When launched front menu it appears for a plot second ten crashes, and loops doing this.
2 (more important): Some games have no sound at all. Some won't even launch saying they can't run without a soundcard. I'm using a Behringer UMC1820, which does work outside of steam and on a few steam games.

I managed to revive #Hofa #ddpPlayer in #Wine.

There's #ddpTools on the command line that is easy to install on #UbuntuStudio #Linux, it is fairly easy to create a #DDP #CDimage for professional #CD manufacturing with it. For free, while other tools for doing this can be very expensive.

But there is only one native tool for Linux that allows you to check the result, which is DDP Tools itself. Doesn't make too much sense to me, because: of course the image by DDP Tools will pass the check of DDP Tools.

But what you want to avoid at any cost is something like having 1000 CDs that have some kind of error in them.

HOFA DDP Player V2 apparently is missing some font and looks rather rustic as a result.

Otherwise, it works well.

Like #Dexed for the #Yahama #DX7, #SQ8L claims to be #SysEx compatible with the corresponding hardware #synthesizer, the #Ensoniq #ESQ80 or #ESQ1. So this means you can load patches from your 80ties hardware synthesizer into the plugin and vice versa.

Sad story is that #UbuntuStudio 24.04 has lost Dexed for some reason, it comes with #Hexter instead which – on my system – completely fails to show the GUI, so it's even worse than SQ-8L. (I'd love to get Dexed back, even though it looked very confusing, I loved the sound.)

These two are related, because the famous DX7 and the ESQ1/80 were new around the same time, both being very digital (the ESQ1 having analog filters, though). The ESQ1 never made it to the same fame as the DX7 did but both sound like the 80ties.

All I had to do is wait. The plugin locks up Carla (and probably even Jack) for about half a minute.

So most likely it is trying to do something that ends in a time-out. When opening the GUI a second time, it pops up instantly.

Any idea on how to find out what this old #VSTi from 2008 is waiting for?

Feels a bit like Christmas.

The ESQ-80 basically was an extended/upgraded version of the #ESQ1, with the most obvious feature being a diskette drive in addition to the memory cartridge slot. But also, Ensoniq had changed the dumb old home-organ-style keyboard by one with responsive action and polyphonic aftertouch.

I wish I could get this to run… (Screenshot stolen).

Actually it does run a bit, I can play it via MIDI in #Carla, but this very old Windows #VST just crashes as soon as I want to open the GUI. I'm using #LinVST on #UbuntuStudio #Linux 24.04 and whenever a Windows plugin has trouble, it is due to the GUI needing #Wine.

Other elderly 32bit #VSTi plugins do work in my system.

So now I'll keep on waiting for the spare parts for my #ESQ1 to arrive from China.

It's astonishing that this Ensoniq synth series isn't that popular today, because the sounds are quite unique. Perhaps it is due to the rather ugly user interface.

Or, more likely, it is because people don't want unique synths, they want that Behringer Moog copy and pretend it's somewhen in the 70ties.
