As this course is taught online only, I have scheduled a voluntary meeting with my students once a week. No pre-registration needed. They may come with their ideas, thoughts and questions or just for listening to the others.
These meetings are very spontaneous in character as I do not know in advance whom I meet or what we are going to discuss. But I like this not plannable occassions very much.

To check that my students have read the course syllabus I hide a minor assignment in it: the students should start a thread in the course plattform and post a picture of an animal (chosen by me). Today the first peace dove has landed.

One of the best things ever is when you have your students having discussions in smaller groups, and they are all so _good_!
Days like this I _love_ teaching.

This is my office this week. ๐Ÿ˜„

I've been helping to teach the "Advanced Field Ecology" 300-level undergraduate course at #LincolnUniversityNZ.

We spend a week in the Southern Alps based at the Boyle Outdoor Education Centre. Students carry out #ecology research projects they planned last year. We've got all sorts of projects happening, from testing possum monitoring methods to seed predation of daisies to the behaviour of NZ's native water spiders.

A photo of some of our staff and students gathered around our nightly moth light. It's a bright mercury vapour bulb on some white sheets. As my wife joked, yes, there is peace and serenity (and moths) in the light.A photo of Michelle and Sam, to members of our class, up on Mount Faust above the tree line looking south down onto the Boyle Outdoor Education Centre. We were collecting seed heads of daisies to compare the seed predation rates between native and exotic plants.A photo of the shrubland and grassland around the Boyle River with tne Boyle Outdoor Education Centre on the top left of the photo on the edge of the forest.A photo of Will Frost, one of our PhD student demonstrators on the course, looking up the valley of the Saint James from the flank of Mount Faust. The cloud cleared and we got some spectacular views. Will was helping our students and also looking for tiger moths for his PhD research.

Do you teach at a university and worry that your students lack the skills to write a bibliography, a research project, a state of the art? Is it end-of-term panic mode for some students?

Direct them to the open access resources of the uni of Geneva, in English and French: infotrack.unige.ch/
Fun, well done, clear, free.

Great tips for literature review, project design, research questions and so on! @academicchatter

@alexbryant In the interest of teaching here is a tip on hashtags: Screenreaders read hashtags as one word unless Capital letters are used (and it provides better human usability). So an example improvement for accessibility would be #UniversityTeaching #AcademicHiring #Prestige for this post. ;) Carry on great job!

Some reasoning about #universityteaching, #academichiring, #prestige. All of this is second hand understanding, so I'm looking for interventions against my misunderstanding. Basic view:

1. Higher departmental prestige tracks higher concern with research output and lower concern with teaching merit in hiring + tenure review.

Thus,
2.: Prestige is unlikely to track teaching merit.

3. Given 2., 3.: It is unlikely that prestige tracks teaching-driven student outcomes.

What are the main challenges that University Computing and IT Departments will have to face in the next decade?

Great to be with a room full of #humanities colleagues today learning about video production for our teaching. We're heading into an afternoon of some technical nitty gritty, my favourite kind of nitty gritty.
