#Web #usability and #accessibility ...
This is from crimethinc.com, but I'm not trying to pick particularly on them. There are many, many, many sites just as bad or worse.
This is a screenshot from an article on their site today, rendered in Firefox (Linux).
See the hair-thin font? See the fact that it's light grey on a white background? There's virtually no contrast between the text and the background.
This is an accessibility nightmare for those with any sort of vision problem. Picking the colour out of the screenshot (I didn't look at the CSS), it appears the text is basically 45% grey. This is ludicrous.
If the font face had some heft, it might be still be half-assed readable with contrast this low.
But as is... If I were to take my contacts out, I wouldn't even be able to tell that this screenshot *had* any of the normal-sized text in it, much less be able to read any of it.
Web designers, I beg you: please consider more than the appearance of what you're creating when you're making design choices.
Remember that not everyone is a 20- or 30-something with near-perfect vision.
Remember that people have cataracts or other types of eye cloudiness which necessitate high-contrast text to be able to read, even if they scale the fonts up by a huge amount.
Remember that vision degrades naturally in people in many ways other than "just wear glasses" can fix.

🎉 Oh great, another "🤔 game-changing" #configuration #language by a lone genius named #Henry, because what could possibly go wrong with yet another #unreadable way to replace INI files? #Confetti promises to make you feel like you're reading the love child of Unix and Lisp, with all the user-friendliness of a brick. 🧱 Who needs JSON or XML when you have this dazzling new way to spend hours #debugging your configuration errors? 🥳

This book puts forward ideas about the development of martial arts as a very modern, and media driven, construct. In itself, the ideas are interesting. But, terribly presented!
The academic jagon is overused, and the prose is needlessly involved. Not only that, but the author tells you what he is going to tell, at least twice, and then quotes himself.
This must be some of the worst academic writing I've seen in a long time!!!
@micheleann I hate the unreadability of inline hashtags.
I think of them as metadata for the post and put them at the end.
And my eyes very #quickly #glaze #over #when I see that #unreadable #mess some people #make of #their #posts
Edit to add: plus most #useful hashtags are not #single #words. #CamelCase for the win!
Indeed, Herr Hitler was a truly gifted orator. I understand he obsessed endlessly about the smallest #details in his #speeches for hours or days before giving them. Much effort, evil intent.
He definitely did not put that kind of #effort into Mein Kampf. That was virtually #unreadable, complete #dreck. I barely struggled through it (pun not intended...). I think college students are probably lucky it's not assigned reading (much) anymore.
#shit, #more and #more #tootd are #completely #unreadable because of this #alwaysbroken and #ludicrous use of #HASHtags. #damnhashtagidiocracy #pleaserefrain #youreaaöythinktjisisgood?
If all your #toots contain an insane number of #hashtags in the text I will probably not #follow you because it's #unreadable, #IMHO.
Daniel... what even is this signature of yours?! 😂
#Funny #Signatures #Unreadable
Search engines on the Fediverse solve a problem not everyone was (is?) aware exists. Either it's something keeping tracks of you, much like it's already being done (your posts are public, restricting who can and can't see it, well that's exactly what you're doing), or #this #absolute #unreadable #nonsense #that #isnt #even #reliable, #to #begin #with.
That's how I see it.
Should opt-out exist? Probably. Much like an actual search engine, those options should perhaps exist.
What can we do as an academic collective to end the epidemic of publishing journals as 3-column PDFs? 🤦♀️
