Brynmill drug dealer jailed after jumping out of his window

36-year-old Lee Paul, from Brynmill, was seen jumping out of the window of his address while police were passing his home while investigating an unrelated matter.

Thinking this looked suspicious, officers then entered his address to find large amounts of cannabis and bags containing other white substances, as well as weighing scales with further white power on a weighing plate.

It was later established that Paul was concerned in the supply of cocaine, ketamine, ecstasy, cannabis and alazopram.

He has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison.

Detective Sergeant Luke Tucker from South Wales Police said: “Lee Paul arousing officers’ suspicion through his unusual behaviour in exiting his home address through the window would be laughable were it not for the seriousness of the drugs operation that he was carrying out inside.

“He is yet another individual who thought that he could become rich from this illegal trade. However, all that drugs has done for him is landed him years in prison.”

Swansea independent school Oakleigh House to close

A spokesperson for Cognita said: “This week we shared some difficult news with our families and staff about the proposal to close Oakleigh House School.

“We carried out a comprehensive review of the school’s sustainability in light of local demographic trends and a changing economic environment, which sadly concluded that pupil numbers are expected to continue to fall to an unsustainable level in the next academic year.

“We will do everything we can to support our families and staff and help our current pupils find alternative school places should the decision be taken to close.”

Situated in the Uplands area of Swansea, adjoining Cwmdonkin Park, Oakleigh House is a co-educational independent primary school for children aged 2 and a half to 11 years. Established in 1919, the school has a number of prominent former pupils, including former Conservative Cabinet Member Michael Heseltine; Comedian and politician Suzie Eddie Izzard and Wales Rugby legend Alun Wyn Jones.

The school is being marketed by agents BP2 Commercial Property for offers in excess of £575,000 with the potential for future redevelopment.

Two men jailed after intimidating family with samurai sword in road rage rampage

South Wales Police say 29-year-old Stephen Harris from Uplands and 27-year-old Lathan Gray from Bonymaen were in a Citroen Xsara Picasso on Llangyfelach Road in Treboeth driven by Harris at around 6.20pm on Sunday 20 April. The vehicle was doing wheel spins and handbrake turns in the middle of a busy main road.

Following a near-collision, a member of public challenged the pair, who then proceeded to follow the challenger’s vehicle, with his partner and seven-year-old son inside, in a threatening and intimidating manner.

Once the victim stopped at the nearby Texaco garage, Harris then stopped his vehicle to block the exit. Grey then exited the vehicle and made further threatening advances towards the victim, including lifting his jumper to show the long handle of the blade tucked into his trousers.

The vehicle also had a false registration plate and was uninsured. Harris was already disqualified from driving until 2029.

Officers located the vehicle a short distance away from the incident, and a further kitchen knife was found within the vehicle when searched, as was a hammer.

Both were charged and remanded and pleaded guilty the following morning.

Lathan Gray has been sentenced to 48 weeks in prison. Stephen Harris has been sentenced to 26 weeks in prison.

Detective Inspector Danielle Thorne from South Wales Police said: “Stephen Harris and Lathan Gray are two men who believe that the law does not apply to them.

“Their intimidating behaviour, particularly towards a family with a young child, was totally disgraceful.

“We hope that they both take their time in prison to think better of this kind of thuggish behaviour.”

Uplands Market highlighted in new ‘pedestrian pound’ report

The Pedestrian Pound is published by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, and shows that investing in better streets and places for walking and wheeling delivers quantifiable commercial returns.

Data shows that pedestrians spend more money than people arriving by car, and pedestrianised town centres have higher footfall.

Living Streets say that this is particularly relevant for Swansea, where the city centre has experienced a decline in footfall in recent years, despite recovering well from the pandemic. 23 per cent of high street services are vacant, and fewer visitors are coming from outside the city.

One of the case studies in the report is Uplands Market, a social enterprise founded by Urban Foundry. The market has transformed Gwydr Square, a side road just off the main street in Uplands, into a traffic-free space for people by temporarily removing a handful of parking spaces for a few hours each month. The market has improved the local economy and encouraged more walking in the neighbourhood.

The first Uplands Market was held in July 2013. Apart from the pandemic, the market has been held on every last Saturday of the month ever since, providing retail space for independent producers of high-quality, locally-made food, drink and craft items.

Footfall at Uplands Market is weather dependent but there can be over 3,000 people on warm sunny days – far more than in the area on a usual Saturday morning. It has been ranked as one of the top ten street markets in the UK by The Daily Telegraph and has twice been runner-up in The Observer Food Monthly awards.

The market intentionally doesn’t offer refreshments, and some local businesses offer special market day deals, helping to support local cafes and shops by bringing increased trade on market day.

In 2018, a survey with about 300 visitors at Uplands Market and its sister market in the marina found that 67 per cent of people had specifically been attracted by the markets and a fifth of people also spent money in surrounding local businesses, typically spending in the region of £10 to £25. Additionally, 77 per cent thought the market had given them a more positive view of the Uplands area. Anecdotally, many people originally attracted by the market now also shop in Uplands on non-market days.

The majority of people in Wales (57%) walk for travel purposes more than once a week2, but charity Living Streets says more needs to be done to integrate walking with public transport and make places more attractive for pedestrians.

Catherine Woodhead, Chief Executive, Living Streets said: “Many high streets in Wales are struggling, so it’s heartening to see how Uplands Market in Swansea has been so successful for the local economy – and a real asset for those who live in the area.

“The Pedestrian Pound proves that making high streets and town centres into spaces where people can walk and wheel increases time – and money – spent in those businesses. Uplands Market is a great example of how creating accessible and attractive public spaces can help to bring communities together.”

Tara Tarapetian, Director of Urban Foundry, said: “Uplands Market has been a great addition to Uplands as a community. It’s taken what would have been a car-dominated space and made it more pedestrian-friendly. Walking and wheeling have been brilliant for the local community and people visiting the market often go on to shop at local businesses in the area.”

Rana Verma owns Babita’s Spice, which trades at Uplands Market, with his wife. He said: “The market is a very social experience for many people, and they can come and shop at a leisurely pace. We find that people feel a lot more comfortable bringing their children, their pets, their toddlers in prams, and the fact that there’s no traffic just make that logistically a lot more straightforward.”

Landore woman jailed after glassing ex-boyfriend in face at Snooker Club

28-year-old Roisin Hannon, from Landore, encountered her ex-boyfriend with a new partner at a snooker club in Uplands on Sunday 26 January.

During a late-night heated argument about money, Hannon threatened to burn her ex’s house down, before pouring her drink over him and smashing him in the face with her glass, leaving him hospitalised with an arterial bleed.

The victim says he does not accept that any money was owed, and was concerned about inaccurate “gossip” about the incident in the community.

Hannon, who previously pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, has four previous convictions for six offences including Class B drug-trafficking, shoplifting, being the owner of a dog that was dangerously out of control, and drink-driving.

She has been sentenced to 26 months in prison. Taking into consideration her guilty plea, she will serve up to half that sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community.

Acting Detective Inspector Danielle Thorne from South Wales Police said: “This was a shameful act of violence which left the victim with serious injuries.

“Roisin Hannon did not care one bit about the wellbeing of the victim. Such violence has no place anywhere or at any time.

“She is now rightfully starting a term in prison, where hopefully she will reflect upon her actions and change her ways.”

Swansea man jailed after string of thefts and drug possessions

South Wales Police say that on September 7, 2024, 43-year-old Ross Philippart, from Strand, in the city centre, entered Uplands Laundrette and stole a handbag from behind the counter.

The bag itself was worth £100, and it contained a £700 gold ring and £200 cash. After extensive enquiries, Philippart was arrested and charged with theft on September 18.

He appeared at Swansea Magistrates Court on January 2, originally pleading not guilty but then changing his plea to guilty.

On January 23, he was sentenced to six months in prison.

PC Scott Morris from South Wales Police said: “Our local businesses have the right to feel safe, and we have a zero-tolerance approach to offending of this nature.

“We will arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”

Having opened it’s doors in April 2022, Bangkok has built a strong reputation for its authentic Thai cuisine, offering a range of stir-fries, soups, salads, sharing platters, and snacks such as prawn tempura, chicken satay, grilled pork, and dim sum, which have become firm favorites among diners in the area.

The restaurant is run by talented chefs April and Chris Napier who previously ran Bangkok Express takeaway in Walter Road for more than five years.

In a heartfelt statement addressed to their “valued customers”, April and Chris expressed the difficulty of their decision to close the restaurant:

“It is with a heavy heart and this may come as a shock that we announce the closing of our restaurant.

“Our last day of service will be Sunday, November 3. Please note, any vouchers purchased must be used by this date, as no refunds will be available there after.”

“As much as we have loved serving you over the years, we have made the difficult decision to step away as we have sacrificed a lot of family time and now we would love to focus on our family/work life balance.”

However, they were quick to reassure patrons that this wasn’t the end of their culinary journey, hinting at future ventures.

“We plan to return with pop-ups in the near future and can’t wait to share more meals and moments with you.

“Thank you so much for your incredible support to our little family business and for being a part of our journey.

“We can honestly say we’ve made lots of great memories and achieved so much during the years, as well as some customers that we’ve come to be friends with. These will be treasured forever.”

Boundary stones or markers are quite common remnants of the world before accurate mapping. This one also marks the boundary between Lancashire and Yorkshire, an important distinction.

I also found the '% of full time workers working 49 hours or more' map interesting. I'd take a punt and say the answer is 'hard working farmers' but I'm not an expert on that - definitely not an urban pattern though

(the 25% here relates to those in full time work, obvs)
