The former #ColumbiaUniversity graduate #student left a federal facility in Louisiana on Friday. He is expected to head to New York to reunite with his #UScitizen wife & infant son, born while #MahmoudKhalil was detained.

“Justice prevailed, but it’s very long overdue,”he said outside the facility in a remote part of Louisiana. “This shouldn’t have taken 3 months.”

In what experts describe as an unprecedented case, Alaska prosecutors are pursuing felony charges against 11 residents of Whittier, most of them related to one another, saying they falsely claimed U.S. citizenship when registering or trying to vote.

The defendants were all born in American Samoa, an island cluster in the South Pacific roughly halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. It’s the only U.S. territory where residents are not automatically granted citizenship by virtue of having been born on American soil, as the Constitution dictates.

His #deportation defense lawyer, Cain Oulahan, confirmed that #RamonMoralesReyes is from Mexico. Oulahan wrote in an email…that the main focus now is to secure Morales Reyes’ release from custody & then to pursue any relief he may qualify for in #immigration court.

“While he has a U visa pending, those are unfortunately backlogged for years, so we will be looking at other options to keep him here with his family, which includes his 3 #UScitizen children,” Oulahan wrote.

Rosa, a #UScitizen in NY, said her Honduran husband was fined $5k. Her husband wasn’t able to leave the country after being granted voluntary departure in 2018 because she was diagnosed w/uterine #cancer. She hopes once she explains the situation, that the fine may be waived. If not, he will have to work many extra hours to pay.
