Rain was right on expectations for the month at #UVic. We recorded 25.4 mm versus the average of 25 mm for May at #UVic. There's nothing to complain about there. of the nine days where rain was observed no day total exceeded 5 mm. Reasonably nice soaking rains for those who have gardens to get started.

Temperatures were on trend for the season. There are two anomalies. The first on 6 May is an abnormally high morning low, compared to my other station at #UVic. It turned out to be a station error. No data was recorded overnight 5--6 May.

I spotted a very clear 22º halo today. This is caused by hexagonal cylinders of ice, tiny crystals, suspended with their long axis roughly perpendicular to the rays from the sun. Refraction splits sunlight into colours and diffraction forms the ring. There's also the suggestion of the circumscribed halo. This #halo is oval, centred on the sun, and meets the 22º halo above and below the sun.

Finally, one really nice observation from last April was that it was exceptionally sunny. I think we probably all enjoyed that!

The graph shows percent difference of the accumulated solar energy as an anomaly of the average for all months. In other words, bars going up are relatively sunny and this year has the highest bar, 15% sunnier than we expected.

Rain at #UVic was quite low this year. Is it worrying? Maybe. Rain in the Spring is really important since climatologically we don't get much in Summer. A dry Spring increases fire risk and stresses our water supply system.
