@RevXenoFact Excellent question. There are three resale shops in my area. Habitat for Humanity's ReStore sells soft covers for $1 and hardcovers for $2. Sally Ann sells softcovers for $2 and hardcovers for $3.99. The best deal though is Goodwill. They sell softcover/hardcover for $1 but you can also get 10 books for $7. It's those days when you really hit the motherload (whoa a whole lot of William Gibson/Game of Thrones/Witcher...) that you reduce your unit cost. Once in a while I'll find 8 or 9 and can't find 1 or 2 more. Then I'll find some mom shopping with her kid and say "grab two books, they're free at this point".
Value Village is complete crap. Sometimes they have some book they think is old and put it on for $1.99 but its actually quite rare or a classic work with a classic pre-movie/tv series cover. But even that's getting rarer these days. $3.99/$5.99 seems to be their general pricing. They'll have totally beaten up copies of Game of Thrones for $5.99+ tax. If I have, like, Ender's Game, Xenocide, and I can't find Speaker for the dead, I might then pick it up at Value Village for $3.99 to complete the set.
All n all, it's pulling a slot machine lever. But the hunt is fun and I enjoy reselling the books, meeting people, and also not reselling them for stupid amounts of money. Like if I can get Lord of the Rings for $6, I'll sell it for $12 when people want $30. Or Game of Thrones for $15 when people want $50.
