#verbing

The relentless drumbeat of "gift" as a verb in the pervasive newsflood reminds me I'm no pedant about changing language, but I nonetheless detest pointless, dorky mutations like "gifted" instead of "gave" (insert the standard blathering defense of how we need "gifted" because "gave" doesn't sufficiently imply that something was given for keepsies…or something like that here). To me, it just makes anyone using it sound like an oaf.

A retro verbing from Torrey Peters:

"The car travels slowly, block by block through traffic. Tourists and a few groups of teenagers Frogger their way across the streets."

Outreach. As a verb.
I realize that if I move into the corporate world this shit will happen constantly.
I'm too curmudgeonly for this.

Words spontaneously verbed in recent conversation: whimsy, sideways, statue. I should set up a verbing stall

I will verb the hell outta some nouns, in the grand Shakespearean manner of verbing nouns, but I eschew verbing phrases, which is generally a verbing too far ("sound designed by," to quote an annoying one I hear in too many podcasts), but if you witness me verbing "gift," you have my authority to call 911 immediately, because that'll mean my brain is bleeding internally.

Good morning... just can't seem to early at the moment 😀

And I'd just like to state that I am all for #verbing, verbing is fun :) nothing wrong with playing around with words, the dictionary is not a rulebook. #Buffy would approve.

On the other hand I am frequently exasperated by things like apostrophe abuse and people mixing up your/you're, than/then, there/their/they're, want/won't, etc. And particularly stupid spelling errors such as writing "diden't" instead of didn't. #wordnerd

@NeadReport

Nouning:
A verbing of the proper word "verb", used to annoy language snobs.

@Algot How can one learn without proper and learning how to leverage their portfolio?

@Trishh one of these days I'll learn how to spell "impaired", and more generally learn to English my prose. FTW!!! FTW!!!! Languageing FTW!!!!!

Why I dislike using "leverage" as a verb in education:

1) it refers to the use of borrowed assets, not earned assets, to accomplish something.

2) it is primarily a word from business use, implying education should be "run like a business".
