Justin Verlander wound up giving up 5 runs altogether. I was looking at his pitches. Their speeds were fine. He placed an abundance of them inside of the strike zone. I don't think he meant to do that, exactly.

While I have you here, velocity is speed + direction. It is a vector, not a scalar. When baseball people speak of a pitcher's velocity, they typically mean the scalar "speed of the pitch."

His general velocity sucked, not because he couldn't hurl a large marble fast enough, but because he wasn't placing the marble around the strike zone very well, and he got hit today, big-time.

He's a #5 starting pitcher now, with a mid-to-high-4's ERA. Aka, his good stuff is inconsistent.
