update - solved by @fskornia - it's a "presser foot screw".. ha!

fellow sewing machine nerds: i am resurrecting a Pfaff Select 1546 from the dead - a thrifting find last week. after 20+ hours of repair work, the machine is nearly done.

i have one last job: i bought a replacement presser foot attach/release assembly. it's supposed to screw into the top feed as shown, unfortunately the assembly didn't come with the screw! (pic 2, shown in red)

can anyone help me identify the screw? i couldn't find it in either the user or service manuals, and web searches are only showing screws for other machines. it would help to know even what the screw is called at this location.

Has anyone tried making sewing machine parts for antique or vintage #sewing machines on a 3-d printer? What part(s) did you make and how did they work? #VintageSewingMachines #SewingMachines #SewingMachineParts #3DPrinting #AntiqueSewingMachines

Finally got back to the sewing machine. Not much to see picture wise, but I've replaced all the wiring as well as the speed control pedal. I found a machine on ebay, cheap, that had a better motor (far less arcy-sparky) and swapped motors. The color, suprisingly, isn't an exact match but it gets it working until I can rebuild the original if I decide I care that much.

Dug into the sewing machine a bit more - the light needs new wiring, it’s cracked inside. So far, the motor wiring still looks good at least. I managed to get the service manual so that shoudl be helpful.

I decided I’m going to use power pole connectors to rebuild the power cables. They're fit for purpose and I have them on-hand.

Is there a bubble of sewists that use vintage machines?

I've just restored my grandma's old Singer 66 from around 1935 back to function.

I learned sewing as a teenager, then did a bit of it in my early 20ies but mostly gave up after that - my machine was a very cheap one from a discounter and I couldn't really make it cooperate

With my old beauty I just love how meditative treadling is and I can see myself taking up #sewing again

An old Singer 66 sewing machine in working condition. The machine has the classic filigree decal, but the standard text on top of the arm is missing.

It's threaded with white thread, a piece of red fabric is under the arm of the machine. Some test stitching on the fabric. The machine is placed before a bookshelf.

Sharing the Geneva library cartographic collection one map at a time! Fully reversible, with a cheerful side / serious geographical side. I printed the open-access map file on silk (using online fabric printing service).

The Singer 66K parts (driving belt, bobbins, bobbin winder ring) arrived! :AirHorn:

The machine now officially sews when I push the foot pedal. I haven't tried winding a bobbin yet, I need to go over the manual again first to figure out where the thread goes.

Anyway, here's a short video showing how it sews and how incredibly loud it is at the moment. After filming this I oiled every hole I could find :AgathaWink: so I'll see if it sounds better tomorrow.

Did some sewing machine maintenance today. Treadle machine has been out of action for a while because tension issues with the shuttle. Was reminded of it after visiting Wimpole Hall this week (sewing machine in servant's quarters needs new belt). A bit of investigation online and I took the shuttle apart and gave it a good clean. Seems to be working better now. If I need any parts or repairs in the future I've at least found out what type it is. #sewing #historybounding #vintageSewingMachines

Update on the Singer 66K I bought today!

Bad news first:
It currently doesn't work.
My bobbins are slightly too big.

Good news:
It only seems to need a new driving belt, all the parts appear to be moving as they should.
So I CAN FIX IT (probably)

Anyway here's some engine noise.

Taking my lovely old Elna Special for a spin, because I need a free arm sewing machine. She is a little ripper.

An older electric sewing machine on a table. It has a pink upper section to the machine. Some paint has worn off the free arm over the years

My old Riccar sewing machine quit working so I picked up this awesome old Pfaff, not a brand I was familiar with but it's a beautifully build post war-ish machine. All metal internal parts. A little heat and lube and it's sewing nicely for some basic tests. The real test will be heavy thread and multiple layers of webbing. #diy #vintagesewingmachines #sewing

This 29-4 was manufactured between May 13 and August 10, 1921 in a production run of 1000 machines and is about half way in the serial numbers.

102 years old.

2023-11-28

The old part caused about 1/4 inch slop, or backlash, as it went up and down. This reduced the stitch length some and caused a lot of missed stitches and I had to have the needle turned slightly to make it pickup the thread somewhat.

No more slop now.
