UB40, Labour of Love, 1983 on A&M

Fourth studio LP from UB40 – a collection of covers including their giant hit “Red Red Wine” – but don’t hold that against them. It’s really a fantastic album start to finish.

“All of these songs were recorded by reggae artists between 1969 and 1972” – they came to “Red, Red, Wine” not via Neil Diamond (who wrote it) but Tony Tribe’s version.

They’d go on to make sequels: Labour of Love II, Labour of Love III, and Labour of Love IV – but none were quite as magical as the first.

My copy—via Worcester Record Riot—is an Electrosound Group Midwest pressing on gold letter A&M labels.

JOE PROBST
The Lion And The Lady
1973 Canada pressing

Going with a mellow, laid-back folky vibe for last spin of the night.

I love this record, minus the weird spoken word pieces that break up the album sides. I could do without those.

Other than that, Joe is a bit of a wordsmith and storyteller, accompanied by lush string and band arrangements. “Kingston” is a gorgeous tune all around both lyrically and musically, and that vibe continues throughout straight to the end. “Sad Sad Song” is also note-worthy, as well as “Someday”.

Just a really nice sounding album, particularly for late night listening.
There’s no mistaking which decade this record comes from, or from which PART of that decade either.

For streaming people, I think this is on Apple Music, so if you’re curious, you can check it out there.

PAINTED BIRDS
Green And Peaceful World
1987 U.S. pressing

Oh… you’re from New Jersey?
Which exit?

A short little batch of songs. Only six.
But Green And Peaceful World is so peaceful indeed. Just really smooth, comforting #indie #alternative songs. Maybe a scruffier Teenage Fanclub or Feelies?

Really clean, earthy pastoral tunes (and a subtle amount of psych), with great melodies and excellent guitars. Surprising that THIS was the only thing they put out.
Six great songs. That’s it.
Worth listening to if you can find it anywhere.
I know the title track is on YouTube.

CRAWLSPACE
In The Gospel Zone
1988 U.S. pressing
Purple vinyl

An obscure gem 💎 of late #80s rocknroll; garage-y, punky, all around blistering guitar meanness.

I bought this about 6 years ago from a used bin in Seattle; a record store in Pike’s Place Market called Holy Cow.
🐮
One of those great blind gambles that I keep coming back to a few times a year. When I’m in need of a high energy blast of badassery, this one is chef’s kiss.

Doomsday Xmas Bonfire for the win!

MARSHALL MCLUHAN
The Medium Is The Massage: With Marshall McLuhan
1967 U.S. pressing

Oh boy…
One of the oddest records I’ve found in a long while.

This album was a musical companion to a book of the same name, which was written by “media philosopher” McLuhan. The book explored how mass media affects the psyche of the population.

The ALBUM is a weird kind of cut-and-paste collage; tapes were cut, spliced, rearranged and overlayed in weird ways while McLuhan reads his script through a whirlwind of bizarre sounds, voices, and weird musical bits.

It’s an experiment that has clearly aged well over the years, and is innovative in a LOT of ways. I encourage you to go to the album’s Wikipedia and check it out, cuz there’s not enough characters here to fully explore how weird it is.

Kind of a crazy record that actually did really well in ‘67, and its reputation is such that it got a vinyl reissue in 2013.

The Pursuit of Happiness, Love Junk, 1988 on Chrysalis

Debut full length from Canada’s The Pursuit of Happiness, with their big hit “I’m an Adult Now.” Produced by Todd Rundgren and recorded at Utopia in the Hudson Valley.

I love their lyrics in particular – “Consciousness Raising as a Social Tool” and “I’m an Adult Now” resonated even when I was 18 but resonate even more as a 50+ year old. Must have 80s record.

My version—via Worcester Record Riot—is a Carrollton GA pressing on the “white with purple butterfly” labels. It’s got some minor warping but plays well.

THE GRAPES OF WRATH
Treehouse
1987 Canada pressing

One of the most criminally underrated bands ever for last spin of the night.

A great Canadian #80s #alternative band who wrote really good songs, this is their second album, and my second favorite of theirs.

Their first album, September Bowl Of Green, continues to elude me, and it’s the only full-length of theirs I don’t have.

Personslly, the real gem for me here is “A Very Special Day”, but it’s only one of a bunch of great, sophisticated power pop songs here.

Stellar album.

THE KINKS
Apeman b/w Rats
1970 Canada 7” single

Two degrees of Jimmy Cliff (R.I.P.).

I mentioned in my previous post of Jimmy Cliff that I’ve had a lifelong love affair with the movie Club Paradise.

“Apeman” by The Kinks is another song that appeared in the movie, but due to licensing issues, did not appear on the official soundtrack.
And yes… I’m so obsessed with Club Paradise I own the soundtrack on vinyl as well, but we’ll save THAT ridiculousness for another time.

The b-side here, “Rats”, is fucking great too.

“Apeman” is Ray Davies going full white #reggae , with that special Kinks twist on it.
It really SHOULDN’T work, but it totally does. It’s a really fun song, and it works perfectly in Club Paradise.
I hate that it’s not on the actual soundtrack.

JIMMY CLIFF
Come Into My Life / Wonderful World, Beautiful People
U.S. reissue 7” single

R.I.P. to a GREAT man.
A very sad day today.

Having my moment with Jimmy on the day of his passing, with my favorite song of his, “Beautiful World, Beautiful People”.

I have pronounced my love for Jimmy Cliff many times in my Masto. And it’s a love that was born from a MOVIE, not his music.
I hadn’t heard a single note of his music before seeing his acting turn in one of my all-time favorite films, Club Paradise, with Robin Williams, Peter O’Toole, and Jimmy.

I watch it a minimum of five times every year, and it’s a film I’ll never get sick of.
Jimmy has one of the great lines of the movie:
“I’ll do it just once. Then I’m gonna burn these clothes.”
😂

It was only after seeing him in Club Paradise as a kid did I then go back and discover his wonderful music. What a gift to the world.

SYRINX
Tillicum
1970 Canada 7” single

Oh man!
What a cool find from today.

Syrinx were a rad Canadian electronic act who were only active for two years, two albums, and THIS single.

It was “Tillicum” that gained them attention, as it was used as the theme song for the CTV documentary series Here Come The Seventies. It was a bit of a hit, reaching #38 on the Canadian charts in 1971.

As far as the show goes, its opening sequence (while “Tillicum” plays) featured a butt naked girl, ass out, walking into the ocean, while other scenes were superimposed over her.

I’m pretty sure it’s on YouTube, and if it is, I’ll post it in the comments for you to watch.

Song wise, it’s a cool, sub-2 minute little electronic piece. A bit of an earworm.
A great little find, with a simple paper sleeve with nothing on the back.

Willie Nelson & Leon Russell, One for the Road, 1979 on Columbia

The first in a series of duet albums from Willie Nelson, released in 1979. Nelson went on to release duet albums with Ray Price, Merle Haggard, Webb Pierce, and Roger Miller all in the early 80s. (There were also many more later of course).

Double LP from two of my musical heroes – joined by Bonnie Raitt on “Trouble in Mind.” Some find it all a bit schmalzy but I really enjoy it. (Of course Willie famously recorded “Song For You” back on 1973’s Shotgun Willie).

My copy—via the Worcester Record Riot—is a Pitman pressing on “Columbia all round” red labels.

Bicycle Race und Dont stop me now bestens bekannt.

Japan, Japan, 1982 on Epic

Compilation album released (in the US) on Epic in 1982, bringing together most of Tin Drum plus some from Gentlemen Take Polaroids. (Neither of those was formally released in the US until 1994). I’ve got a UK Tin Drum but still looking for a good vinyl copy of Gentlemen.

One the best underrated bands of the era – though I feel like now people have come to understand how wonderful they are. David Sulvian in particular is just a master.

My copy—via the Worcester Record Riot—is a Terre Haute pressing.

ROY SUNDHOLM
The Chinese Method
1979 Canada pressing

A very fun and underrated album for last spin of the night.

Roy Sundholm was a one time member of The Spencer Davis Group, but that is not THIS.

This is a really bright and catchy #powerpop and #newwave album; more in the vein of Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe than it is the former.

The real gem of this album is “Go Zero”, a song so deliriously catchy it’ll get stuck in your head for days.

Sundholm was also in a band in the early 70s called The Ratbites From Hell, which was closer to sounding like THIS great album.
