#Blind and #visionimpaired people, and those who design accessible #PenPaper #rpg rulebooks in my followers: How do you read roleplaying game books, and what do you do with charts, map and illustrations?

Right now, most of my rulebook is text (see roa.5f9.de), and relies on purely textual information to convey things. That should be decently accessible with a screen reader.

BUT: I am thinking of redoing the skill "tree" with a hex map, so that each skill learned unlocks those that are touching that hex for future learning.

So, assuming you learn the skill "Physical Combat", that has "Stalwart Defender", "Hold Ground" and "Shield Use" adjacent to it - so these are unlocked now, even though "Shield Use" is part of a different skill group.

Visually, it is pretty easy to lay out and read. But how would that translate that to a screen reader? Would it be enough to list all adjacent skills in a skills description, and then people compile the map in their head?

My design goal is to lower cognitive load and lookups wherever I can, and this is a great way to do it visually, but I fear that it'll make things a lot harder for non-seeing people?

*edit: Boosts welcome

a colour-coded hex map of various fighting skills. with about 50 to 60 skills grouped like the petals of a flower.

3D printing in education & tactile technology in sport, are just two ways technology is revolutionising access to community for people who are blind or vision impaired.

Have you used 3D printing or other tactile technology? Tell us about it!

Thank you to the #ADHD, #Dyslexic and #VisionImpaired people here on mastadon who asked for audiobooks of my writings. The more people tell me their access needs, the better position I am in to encourage/ convince my publishers to make my work #Accessible.

Delighted my latest publisher agreed to make an #Audiobook of Wired Our Own Way; An Anthology of #Autistic Irish voices, which will be released tomorrow. Not sure all the platforms it will be on yet.

Screeenshot of audible page showing Wired Our Own Way; An Anthology of Irish Autistic Voices. Edited by Niamh Garvey. Preorder 1 credit. Narrated by Shelley Atkinson and Liam Gerrard

Case in point, it's wrong to be #ableist even if most people post & re-post graphics of famous quotes or other brief, poignant words. Almost everyone does it. I do it far too often. But it's still wrong to be ableist. It's wrong to exclude #VisionImpaired folks. I'm "preaching" at myself, here.

Some are IMO predatory scum.

A vision impaired elderly relative was for years using the local drycleaners.

Who would return the clothes still stained.

It wasn't until someone else put their glasses on and went through the clothes that had been drycleaned and found stains on most of them that the racket was unearthed.

A stern rebuke to the drycleaners was delivered in person by the discoverer.

A “Listen Now” button with headphones is positioned on the right side of the screen. "Hey, let's include #braille on this container, so that people who are #blind or #visionimpaired can use it, too!" #accessibility gone wrong?

A measure indicator on the plastic container. 2.0L followed by 4 dot patterns that look like Braille. All patterns include plastic bumps for all 6 dots, although the "flat" dots are less pronounced than the 'real' bumps. The first character has dots 2, 3, the second 4, 5, 6, the third has 3, 5, 6 and the fourth has 1, 2, 3. In my opinion, they only got the last one correct.

Are there any bots/automated accounts that / folks like to follow?

Not necessarily image/video-based ones, but I'd really like to see examples of those, if there are any.

2024-05-16

So I've been called out for alttexthalloffame.org not being run by someone who's #blind or #VisionImpaired.

And that's fair. I'm very much open to anyone from those communities to get directly involved, so this is my public invitation.

Would also love to hear from the and community: who are your favorite webcomic artists that you enjoy following on here?

@VastHypno Good question! I'd imagine yes, with an appropriate warning, but would love to hear from the community on how to best approach this.

Another advantage of being on a smaller fediverse instance: (mostly) better experience for #blind and #VisionImpaired folks.
