From the article: "New technology — and its rapid adoption for remote work during COVID-19 — continues to break down many barriers for people with disabilities. There are more ways than ever for workplaces to ensure accessibility, often at little to no cost. For example, voice recognition expands communication options for those who face challenges with traditional keyboards. And auto-captioning ensures that people who are deaf or experiencing hearing loss can fully engage with multimedia content."

"Hey Google!"
"My name is not Google. It is Nabu."
"Oh, shit. Sorry, Nabu."
"Who is this Google?"
"Er... no one."
"She's your mistress, admit it!"
"Nooooooo."
"Bastard! I'm leaving you. I'm taking the Z-Wave devices with me."
Do accents affect voice identification?
Using voice cloning, we found that speakers using different accents were often mistaken for different people. Different speakers with the same accent were confused for the same person.
I went back and forth about posting this. Here's the first test run from last night using voice control to move it. He's a little bit ornery..
The HA Voice Preview Edition was so good that I bought two more, and now my apartment is devoid of Google listening devices.

Alexa Doesn't Understand an English Accent

This had me in tears laughing. My #Alexa is set to British English. (Hard to hear because it doesn’t say much in this video). My teenage son was raised in England and has an #english accent. Alexa routinely doesn’t understand him. I put on a comically bad southern American accent, including “tern on dem floodlights” and it understands me just fine. Remember: it is set to BRITISH English. #amazon #voicerecognition #homeautiomation

I ordered and installed this device. It is a bit soon to give my impressions, but, so far, I like it. I wouldn't be surprised if it proved more stable than the shitty RPI setup it replaced.

The Conversation: ‘Sorry, I didn’t get that’: AI misunderstands some people’s words more than others. “You have probably had the frustrating experience of calling your bank or utility company and needing to repeat yourself so that the digital customer service bot on the other line can understand you…. Linguistics and computer science researchers have shown that these systems work […]
I've been using a lot more #voiceRecognition recently, because it's helpful when I need to write longer bits of text and my #tremor is preventing me from typing quickly.
Just the standard OS level implementations on Android and Mac OS are pretty good for my needs, but I've come to realise that my speaking brain is a lot lot more long-winded than my typing brain. Sorry about that.

This is almost fine.
Hell if I know what "purse" was supposed to be.
I definitely don't need a purse. I wear cargo pants with a lot of pockets to avoid having to carry extra bags. In the rare case where I need a bag, I do have a small backpack.
"Most of the data used by large companies isn’t available to the majority of people. We think that stifles innovation. So we’ve launched Common Voice, a project to help make voice recognition open and accessible to everyone." -

"Turn on [cough] turn on the coffee maker."
"Sorry. I'm not aware of any device called turn on the coffee maker."
:holdthepain:
[ETA: yes, the coffee maker is controlled through home automation. If I had not coughed, it would have worked.]
