Two great developments on safer and healthier buildings in Washington and Oregon. A fossil fuel industry-backed ballot initiative that narrowly passed in Washington (I-2066) – that would have severely hindered local and state efforts to accelerate buildings moving to high-efficiency electric appliances – was found unconstitutional. An appeal is likely, but this is a great development.

Fifteen Washington State representatives have sponsored HB 1584 to end voting by mail for non-absentee voters and restore in-person voting. This is a blatant attempt to decrease voter participation in the state. It should come as no surprise that all the bill’s sponsors are Republicans, following their MAGA overlords’ playbook. Ranked Choice Voting to our state. I’ve been hoping for this because elections should reflect what voters actually want, not just who can game the system. RCV means fairer results, and more real choice. Definitely keeping an eye on this one!

I highly recommend taking the time to watch or listen to the recent press conference by Washington State Governor-elect Bob Ferguson and Attorney General-elect Nick Brown on the state’s efforts to prepare for a potential second Trump term. While it’s a bit ‘inside baseball,’ it gives a good overview of how the state is planning for the future.
Sharing good news as a tonic: The State of Washington rejected an initiative that would have repealed the carbon auction cap-and-trade system. It has produced revenues for greatly increased investments in transit, active transportation, home energy improvements, and other climate-friendly work (including programs I oversee so yes I'm relieved).
