Sometimes you think of the starwhale from Doctor Who and draw a little whale friend as you remember the episode. At least that is what led to the creation of this tiny whale.

I draw each of my flat 3D prints in Procreate, upload them to Maker World's "image to keychain" tool, download the file, and then print it. It's a quick way to make hand drawn art into something you can hold. I guess you could also print our your art as stickers but I enjoy the 3D prints.

I finished a #PaleoArt piece for an article my father is writing about the natural history of an area in the Netherlands. This is a predatory Sperm whale that lived in the Northsea during the Miocene (13 to 5 million years ago). It's name is Physeterula Ubusi. A digital painting of a prehistoric predatory Sperm whale that lived during the Miocene, 13 to 5 million years ago. It is hunting Atlantic cod-like fish and has broken the surface above, causing plumes of bubbles to shoot into the water. This whale is called Physeterula Ubusi. It is a very loose interpretation of how it could have looked like. Only a few teeth and skull fragments have been found in the Netherlands. We know it would be around 6 meters long and that it lived in the Northsea. I was inspired by modern Sperm whales and orca's/killer whales for the design, since I figured that it must have had a similar lifestyle as such a nimble predator. Also, the fossil structures of other early Sperm whales in this time period suggest that they didn't yet have the characteristic squared heads for diving into the depths, which is why I gave it a more hydrodynamic shape for it's head, a bit more reminiscent of Orca's and Pilot whales.

I finished another whale painting. This time a sperm whale mother and her cub. I love these wonderful creatures, mysterious giants that are very hard to keep track of since they continuously dive towards depths of over two kilometers in order to hunt and feed on giant squid using extremely powerful sonar to sense their worlds below. You can't really get much more awesome than that.

Two sperm whales, a mother and cub, are diving towards the dark abyss, kicking up turbulence at the surface as they descend.

I just finished this digital artwork of a humpback whale with her cub. I used a tiny photograph in an old book as reference. It was fun to scale that up. Really satisfied with this one and it is the first time that I've reached the level of quality that I have been aiming for since I started focussing on digital painting for one and a half year ago.
