Our Castorp is now four and a half years old. He's our first Whippet, so I have no personal experience of general patterns, but it seems to me that he's come to his own, still playful but with an added layer of serenity.
He's nimble and curious. He soaks up my daughters' noisy affection with childlike joy. His eyes when he looks at me are deeper than ever. He runs for joy, his own pure undiluted joy. When we walk as a family, he walks ahead and checks the environment, his family's safety depends on it. He sits near me in quiet contentment, not moving one bit. I do a noisy bookcase search near his den in the middle of the night (I need that book!) --- he stays cool, he knows it's me. He does his rhoah-rhoar-rhour growl when family members play or cuddle without him. At night he looks at me just to check. He rolls on his back, all legs in the air, and gets belly rubs from my daughters. Bless you, Castorp.
My Castorp, a Whippet, thinks we are there to love him and give him food and play, and he thinks he is there to protect us. (Us: I, the guv'nor; my wife; our twin daughters.). When we all walk him together, he eyes the streets for dangers for his family, When I am out alone with him, on a long walk, it's more the other way round. Either way, if there was the slightest actual danger, he'd be hiding in a corner! Bless him.
Are we dogs to him? Does he think he is he a four-legged version of us? I don't know, probably not. He just thinks we are right for him, and he is right for us. He doesn't understand why we don't give him more good things, but he's not keeping track of credits and debits and just loves us as we are.
He doesn't like any family cuddling that excludes him. He will do his "why am I not part of this?" growl until he is part of it. So it's pack, I guess.

Castorp my Whippet has some issue with his front right paw, or perhaps with the leg and the joints. He limps. We have been to the vet but he couldn't find anything.
Castorp still begs to get out to walk, tail wagging and eyes melting to win me over. But when out, he is hesitant, stops all the time, and feels subdued. Poor, poor chap. I suspect he has pain. Another trip to the vet tomorrow.
Roamer as the guv'nor is troubled. Dog unhappy, guv'nor unhappy.
This creature is a deeply loved inter-galactical friend.

Three good things.
1. Out with my whippet Castorp for a long walk on the hills.
2. Castorp had a good free run with a friendly spaniel, having fun.
3. Castorp had another lovely run with another lovely spaniel. So many friends!
As an aside, if your dog has arthritis, we have found that a course of Adequan every 6 months works miracles. Drug development has made huge leaps since ~2012 when Rocket started suffering from arthritis, and all you could do was give Rimadyl (dog Advil, basically) #dogs #whippets #greyhounds
