I haven't gotten the urge to carve tiny trout out of redwood out of my system yet.

Der heutige Stream war klasse und die DnD-Figur sieht langsam schon nach etwas aus, finde ich.

When you have many #rabbitholes in your life, here is one that the #whittling community might enjoy: atlasobscura.com/articles/ches

Maybe yet another project for me to carve a complete #chess set!

This is a much more dynamic santa that I carved. I've shown him off before but he's gotten a paint job now. Really love how the candy cane behind the back turned out. 😀 #woodcarving #whittling #santaclaus #caricature #practicemakesprogress #folkart #christmas #christmasdecor

oh I'm going to be SO annoying about these, I'm unreasonably proud of myself

starting position for today! these fish should end up about the same size, so even though I would describe a carving in this (left) state "90% done", there is still a lot of wood to remove

anyway I thought "well it's still a week until my partner's birthday, and you know what's better than a carved wooden fish? two or three carved fish, in different types of wood!" so here we are. if I fuck this up I still have one pretty good fish done, so my handful of blessèd fedifollowers may have PROCESS PHOTOS (which I usually forget to take)

ever and always, Step One is the block. this is California myrtlewood, which is the fancy lumber trade name for bay laurel, the same trees whose dried leaves go in the soupstep two of carving a fish specifically is The Curve. now it's still mostly a block but with one long side carved round, tapering at both endsstep 3, the interior curve. now it's an arch, or an elongated C shape with one fat end

she doesn't go here so I'm free to say on THIS website "look at the fish I made my partner for her birthday next weekend"

carved raccoon with woodburn details, an experiment

a simple raccoon carved from a small piece of redwood, with blobby lil fat legs and a kinked tail, standing on moss. there's a little larva sticking out of the moss, too, I just noticedtop view of carved raccoon. the mask and rings on the tail are scorch markscarved raccoon facing rightcarved raccoon facing camera, showing the burn marks that define its eyes, nose, and mask

Here are a couple of wooden figures I carved. I tried a new technique—burning patterns into the wood with a soldering iron. I think it worked quite well. These figures don’t really have a specific story behind them, but perhaps they could be seen as some kind of spirits or gnome-like beings from Finnic folk belief. Kalevala often comes to mind with wooden figures like these, but that’s not really my goal or intention when carving. The pieces just tend to turn out the way they do. I don’t usually make detailed plans, as I wouldn’t know how to follow them through into finished works anyway.

one of my partner's favourite neighborhood trees, a California buckeye, was cut down a month or so ago and I wanted to make her a little fetish out of the salvaged wood to memorialize it. buckeye, it turns out, is very fibrous and hard to work with, but I am pretty happy with this jackrabbit.
