Happy Boxing Day!
Hope you had a great Christmas if you’re celebrating and are enjoying your vacation otherwise. This is a little sneak peek of a new print I made recently of an alfalfa leaf cutter in the act of cutting its telltale half-moon cut in a leaf. I made a collection of prints to illustrate a little board book written by Lisa Jaffe about our pollinator friends in the garden. #InverteFest is hosting an anthology! 🧵

I love the "work" that I do, because I get emails like this:
A recent study shows that the number of wild bee species in Europe at risk of extinction has more than doubled in the past decade. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 172 out of 1,928 bee species are now endangered. Similarly, the number of butterfly species at ri... [More info]

Outdoor clothing company Fera made a short (12 minute) film about building log hives for wild bees.
This is not your usual beekeeping.
This is not done for money.
This is not done for honey.

Where do the wild bees thrive?
How can we stop the alarming decline of bee populations around the world? Research at our Uni and Halle shows a well-designed mix of habitats is key: areas should complement each other in terms of resources - such as food and nesting - to support a wider range of bee species: https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html?id=7838

"Island-wide removal of honeybees reveals exploitative trophic competition with strongly declining wild bee populations"
Researchers show, again, the obvious: domestic herds of bees compete with wild bees, leading to biodiversity loss. Just like with other herding activities.
<💬>
• Honeybee temporal removal on a small island increased nectar and pollen availability
• Without honeybees, wild bees increased activity and changed hourly patterns
• Without honeybees, wild bees increased nectar intake and optimized search time
• Wild bee abundance declined ∼80% in 4 years, supporting trophic competition
