La photo animalière c'est surtout des rencontres.
Et ce brocard en est une extraordinaire.
Il est resté un long moment la nuit tombante à 10, 15m de moi. A m'observer, curieux et peu farouche, alors que j'étais debout sans filet ni réel camouflage (à la base venu voir un blaireau qui n'est jamais sorti), à lui chuchoter de faire attention à la chasse qui approche, entre 2 photos au 1/20ème de seconde.
Alors qu'il en soit ressorti quelques belles photos, c'est un plus qui immortalise cette rencontre unique.

Matarakiitäjä nauttii mäkitervakoiden medestä. The bedstraw hawk-moth enjoys the nectar of sticky catchfly/clammy campion (Viscaria vulgaris).
Mäkitervakoiden kukinta kallioilla on tänä vuonna loistokasta ja edesauttaa kaikenlaisia hyönteisiä, jotka tarvitsevat mettä ja siitepölyä. Matarakiitäjä on aika iso, kolibrimainen, voimakas ja nopea lentäjä. Niitä näkyilee päivälläkin, vaikka ovat ilmeisesti aktiivisimpia hämärän ja pimeän aikaan. Yleinen perhonen Suomessa, ehkei helpoin kuvattava... :-)

The flowering of the sticky catchfly on the hills is magnificent this year and is good for all kinds of insects that need nectar and/or pollen. Bedstraw hawk-moth is quite large, hummingbird-like, powerful and fast flyer. Butterfly can also be seen during the day, although they are apparently most active at dusk and dark. A common butterfly in Finland, maybe not the easiest one to photograph... :-)

Taivaanvuohi ja piiiiiiitkä nokka! Snipe and the looooong bill!
Rankkojen sateiden jälkeen kosteikko taisi olla hyvin vetinen, kun taivaanvuohi pöllähti tänään suoraan eteeni niitylle. Ei ihan jokapäiväinen tapahtuma! :-) Lintu katseli minua tarkasti ja käveli korkean ruohon sekaan. Kaikenlaista syötävää löytynee paremmin nyt kuin kuivilla säillä, vaikka tuolla nokalla kaivaa syvältäkin proteiiniruokaa. Suomenkielinen nimitys taivaanvuohi tulee mäkättävistä äänistä, joita kuulee soidinajan hämäräaikoina. Se ei ole linnun laulua vaan pystösulkien aiheuttamia ääniä nopeassa alaslennossa, jolla ilmeisesti tehdään vaikutus naaraaseen.

After heavy rains, the wetland was very watery, as snipe landed directly in front of me in the meadow today. Not an everyday occurrence! :-) Bird watched me carefully and walked into the tall grass. It'll find many kinds of food better now than in dry weather, although it surely digs deep for protein food with that long bill. The Finnish name taivaanvuohi (goat of the sky) comes from sounds that can be heard during the twilight hours of the courtship season (sounding a little like goat's bleat). It's not bird's song, but sounds are created by tail feathers in fast downward flight, perhaps to impress the female birds.

A few days ago I was extremely lucky: a cuckoo landed on a dead pine tree on a high hill where I was photographing butterflies, and started calling. Only males make the “cuck-koo” calls. Under the cover of the trees, I approached the bird carefully and was able to take video of cuckoo's calling for the first time: https://youtu.be/WC-RQrq71Cs?si=ESmnbWjN3HtUDGMA
I also learned something new: the aftersound ("coo") comes from the lower breast (not from bill).

Kurjet katselivat levottomina ympäriinsä, joka vaikutti oudolta, kun ihmisten läsnäolo ei tuntunut häiritsevän (turvavälistä pitivät kyllä huolen, varsinkin poikasten kanssa).Joten katsoin taivaalle ja sitten tien toiselle puolelle: kettuhan siellä istui pellolla aamuauringossa. Ajatukset vilistelivät mielessä: voiko kettu olla uhkaksi kurkien poikasille, kurki on aikas iso lintu, mutta ketullakin poikaset ruokittavana, etc. Seisoskelin siinä peltojen välissä katsellen kurkiperhettä ja kettua. Kettu lähti saalistamaan jyrsijöitä. Kurjet jatkoivat poikasten ruokkimista. Kuulin eräältä ihmiseltä kurkiemon iskeneen kettuun niin, että se oli ollut paikoillaan jonkin aikaa ja sitten jatkanut matkaa pois. Elämä jatkuu..

The cranes looked around restlessly, which seemed strange, since people passing by didn't seem to disturb them (they did take care of the safety distance, especially with the chicks). So I looked at the sky and then on the other side of the road: there was a fox sitting in a field in the morning sun. Thoughts were racing through my mind: could fox be a threat to crane chicks. I stood there between the fields, watching the crane family and the fox. The fox went hunting for rodents. The cranes continued feeding the chicks. I later heard that an acquaintance had witnessed a parent crane attack a fox..

Käki, jonka kuulee usein, mutta harvoin näkee. The cuckoo is often heard but rarely seen.
Käkien ääniä alkoi kuulu jo muutama viikko sitten, jolloin ajattelin, että tulisipa kukkuilemaa tuohon lähipuuhun korkealla mäellä. Seuraavalla viikolla se sitten tulikin, silloin käsissä oli eväsleivät eikä suinkaan kamera, jota hamutessaa arka lintu vaihtoi jo maisemaa. Käen kukkuminen on meille suomalaisille yksi kesän äänistä, kun käymme saunassa, uimme ja katselemme laskevaa aurinkoa. Muutama kuva, kun käki on osunut kuvausetäisyydelle.

I started hearing the sounds of cuckoos a few weeks ago, and hoping the bird would come calling nearby tree on a high hill. The following week it really did, but then I had sandwich in my hands and not a camera. While I looked for the camera the timid bird was already changing the scenery..
For us Finns, the cuckoo's calling is one of the sounds of summer, when we go to the sauna, swim and watch the setting sun (if it's setting, in Northern areas, sun doesn't set down for months). A few pictures when the cuckoo has come within shooting distance.

Siellä yksi pää näkyy, ehkä toinenkin poikanen näkymättömissä, joten risupesä lähellä ihmisasutuksia ja kalansaalistusvesiä ei ole ehkä huono valinta. Jotkut lajit sopeutuvat, toiset eivät.

When there are less and less suitable old nesting trees in the South-West Finnish's forests, a large and tall seaway marker will do for a nest (2nd picture). A head of a chick is visible, perhaps another one is also in the nest. Twig nest situated near people's settlements and fishing waters is perhaps not a bad choice. Some species will adapt, others won't.
