Description by Gemini Fast: A vertical photo of an European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) seen at ground level on a gravel path under dark night-time conditions. The hedgehog is curled slightly, showing its distinctive brown and cream quills, and its dark snout and small eyes are visible, illuminated by a flash or external light source.Description by Gemini Fast: A close-up action shot of a bird, likely a female or juvenile Blackbird (Turdus merula) or a similar thrush species, clinging upside down to a metal suet or fat ball feeder. The bird's wings are spread in motion, showing its grey-brown plumage, as it pecks at the food inside the green wire cage.Description by Gemini Fast: A tight close-up of a light brown moth, possibly a Swallow-tailed Moth (Ourapteryx sambucaria), resting on a white window frame next to a glass pane. The moth's wings are spread flat, showing fine dark lines and small black spots. Its reflection, along with the green bokeh of garden foliage, is clearly visible in the adjacent window glass.Description by Gemini Fast: A vertical, macro photograph of a large, dark brown Crane Fly (likely genus Tipula), characterized by its long, slender legs, delicate clear wings, and thin body. The insect is resting vertically on a pale surface indoors, backlit by warm interior lighting that casts a soft shadow.

Scuba Diving the Bligh Waters of Fiji

Fiji is known throughout the scuba diving community as the soft coral capital of the world. Last year, I had the opportunity to dive the famous Bligh Water reef system.

https://youtu.be/8-1lOpFx3lk

During my visit, an approaching storm pushed sediment toward the island, limiting visibility on some dives. However, these conditions only really affected underwater videography. The sediment trusted around the dive sites reminded me of a snowstorm.

The overall health and beauty of the coral reef was truly magnificent. In the video, you will observe small fish venturing away from the reef to collect floating nutrients in the water column.

FAQs

What level of diver certification is suitable for Bligh Water dives?

Most dives in Bligh Water occur at shallow to moderate depths (5–25 m), making them accessible to Advanced Open Water or similar mid‑level certification. Beginners may also enjoy shallow reef dives when conditions are calm.

Is visibility in Bligh Water reliable year‑round?

Not always. During Fiji’s wet or stormy seasons, sediment from runoff or storms can reduce visibility to around 5–10 m. The best visibility typically occurs during the dry season (May–October) after weather clears.

Are there strong currents or hazards to be aware of?

Currents in Bligh Water tend to be mild to moderate on most dives, especially along reef slopes. However, after storms or during tidal changes, surge or particulate matter can affect visibility and water clarity — always follow local dive‑operator advice and plan accordingly.

The population security of Franklin's ground squirrels in Alberta is unknown and suspected to be at risk. Please report sightings if you see one next summer in the central Parkland (campgrounds are great spots to find them).

They have grizzled fur (salt and pepper highlights), a grey head and tail, and a bushy tail (unlike the more common Richardson's ground squirrel).

"don't give me that guff, that was a dirty foul & you're outta this game!" -- if golden tanagers were refs...

Two small birds are disputing on a mossy branch. The olive green bird is stretched out long with open beak in the shouty/attack position. The shorter, stouter bright yellow bird with black cheek patch is standing tall, is also open-beaked shouting, and appears to be gesturing violently with a wing as if to show the olive dude the door. This is the Palm Tanager (olive) vs Golden Tanager (you can figure that one out) at La Florida reserve in Colombia. The Golden Tanagers were feeding some young fledglings and were extremely aggressive on the day of my visit. The Palm Tanagers are just nervy all the time every time I've seen them anywhere. Nibble nibble nibble ... winter is coming for these #prairieDogs! (OK, this was July, and they're probably hibernating already, or rather chilling in their burrow)

This image features two prairie dogs in a natural, outdoor setting. Both prairie dogs are positioned on a mound of dirt. The prairie dog in the foreground is sitting and holding a piece of grass in its paws and nibbling on it. The second prairie dog, slightly behind, is sitting upright and similarly nibbling on a piece of grass, holding it to its mouth with a paw. The background is softly blurred, showcasing green foliage and trees, suggesting a lush, wooded environment.

Déjà-roe 🦌

A second attempt this morning! This time, they were grazing in the field, and I spent 20 mins creeping closer and closer until they ran off eventually. This is as good as it gets, I'm afraid, with 150 mm. Still a magical encounter, watching them interact with each other 😍

A tranquil rural scene at dusk, bathed in soft, muted light. Four deer stand in a grassy field, their silhouettes dark against the pale green and yellow hues of the landscape. Three of the deer are standing upright, alert and facing slightly different directions, while the fourth deer, a buck with antlers, is grazing with its head lowered to the ground.

In the background, a dense line of leafless trees and shrubs forms a natural boundary, their bare branches adding texture to the scene. The sky is tinged with a gentle pinkish-purple glow, suggesting early morning.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 3 - Still one of the highlights of my summer--photographing a female (or juvenile) merlin in rural Alberta. This one let me get within about 6ft of her, and I have a couple close ups, but I love something about this one along the fence line.
