Due to lack of funds and a need to edit #video (#Kdenlive), I #hacked my old non-#TPM #PC to run #Win11 (boo, hiss!)

For #retro #Win16 apps, I use #OTVDM.

And (#DOScember) to run even more ancient #MSDOS progs like they are #Win64 native (and because #NTVDMx86 is sterling, but can be a faff), I use #DosBox with this #commandline:

start /min DOSBox.exe z:\EXAMPLE.EXE -exit

:zorin: installed on #mindy and thus far I am very pleased with both look and feel on this #AcerSwift3 with #Ryzen4700u laptop.

Only thing I couldn't quickly sort out is the Fingerprint Password Settings app in the #zorinOS repo.

Other than that I have no problem seeing why it has become a popular choice for those with #Win10 that Microsoft gave a 🖕 to about upgrading to #Win11.

Good god. Windows 11 has so much latency. From pressing win+e to showing a populated file explorer takes almost 1.5 seconds. Notepad takes about the same. This is so shit. It's going to take a long while for this to feel normal.

I need to hassle IT to let us run baremetal #linux on our work machines.

Is it a perfect storm for :linux: happening, now boosted by exploding RAM prices?

All those on #Win10 machines that can't get #Win11 might simply be priced out of buying a new machine very soon.

So their choice would be to stay on Win10, or at least until prices go down try #Linux.

2026 can be a really interesting year I think.

Jetzt habe ich es getan. Seit heute läuft mein Laptop mit Debian 13 und Plasma Desktop. Schweren Herzens habe ich die Affinity Suite geopfert, vielleicht wird sie eines Tages mit Wine laufen, wer weiß.

Aber unglaublich, wie die Kiste rennt. (Lenovo E14 Gen3 mit Ryzen 5). Alles geht Out-of-The-Box.

And while we are about it, it really is upsetting to hear how many companies are thanking #Microsoft for creating so much e-waste. Oh sorry, I mean stopping support of #Windows10 They are betting their future profits on the need to buy new machines to run #Win11 🤦‍♀️

Never mind the poor consumer, who is having to prioritise food and medical care, over security. I know @wendynather has a great term for it (which I can’t remember right now), but let’s call it tech debt until someone reminds me.

Dear #microsoft, please stop trying to get me to enable OneDrive backups seemingly every third update on a machine that has working backup software installed that doesn't dump stuff on OneDrive.

This is getting rather tiring the few times I have to use Windows instead of Linux on this machine.

So, #WoW is crashing in #Bazzite even with only 2 addons loaded: Details and Baganator.

I've tested with Proton Experimental and 10.0, and both crashed unrecoverably on me.

Doesn't look like #Win11 is going anywhere just yet...

This is most excellent. It should broadcasted on all media platforms. i thoroughly agree with the implied solution which is to move over to a #Linux OS (there’s are buckets full of Linux flavours to try out - I found the simplest to be #LinuxMint, but that’s based on limited experience with other distributions) and it’s all #FREE.

As Microsoft itself have revealed, #Win11 is a BrOkEn proprietary and expensive operating system going nowhere…
