I completed the essential Saturday ritual – the thorough, German-style maintenance needed to get the car ready for fall/winter:

1. Picked up the winter tires from the tire dealer
2. Had the summer/winter tires swapped at the workshop
3. Stored the summer tires
4. Charged the car
5. Had the new winter wheels re-torqued/tightened
6. Washed the car, inside and out

Twice a year, we deep clean. One before the long winter and one after. Today, the reset begins. The house will sparkle… for about 12 hours until the dogs, life, and dinner hit.

Travel during the winter has unique risks, especially if you travel by car. Being prepared can help you "expect the unexpected" so your trip isn't ruined by common problems travelers face in the winter.

Know before you go:

From blizzards, to avalanches, to ice storms, be aware of the winter risks in places you visit.
Check the local weather forecasts and warnings before heading out. Visit National Weather Service for up to date forecasts and download the FEMA App for alerts in up to five locations.
Check your local weather and traffic reports
before heading out.
If your roads are not in good shape, consider postponing non-essential travel until the roads are cleared. If you do have to go out, make sure you are prepared in case you become delayed while traveling.
Tell others your route and anticipated arrival time.

Preparing for Winter Weather
Prepare your home to keep out the cold with insulation, caulking and weather stripping. Learn how to keep pipes from freezing. Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups. Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power. Keep in mind each person's specific needs, including medication. Remember the needs of your pets.
Have extra batteries for radios and flashlights. If you are unable to afford your heating costs, weatherization or energy-related home repairs, contact the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for help.
In Case of Emergency
Be prep ed for winter weather at home, at work and in your car. Create an emergency supply kit for your car.
Include jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water and non-perishable snacks. Keep a full tank of gas.
Stay Safe During Winter
Weather
Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Only use generators and grills outdoors and away from windows and never heat your home with a gas stovetop or oven. Using an oven or stovetop can also increase the risk of fires, burns and could damage the appliance.
