Varvara Stepanova, ะšะฝะธะณะฐ ะธ ั€ะตะฒะพะปัŽั†ะธั (The Book and the Revolution), 1929 and 1930.

Often mentioned only alongside her husband, Alexander Rodchenko (whose photography was used here), Stepanova was an accomplished artist in her own right. She designed the covers and interiors of this journal of politics, culture, criticism, and bibliography.โ

Always a real pleasure: visiting Hansje van Halem, whose archive is housed at the UvA/Allard Pierson. And yes: riso printed letters fade easily.

Varvara Stepanova, flyer for "The Death of Tarelkin", 1922.

Often mentioned only alongside her husband, Alexander Rodchenko, Stepanova was an accomplished artist in her own right. Along with this flyer, she also designed the sets for the production. While itโ€™s not known if she designed the costumes for this production, the image is very similar to the geometric clothing she created for other plays.

Corita Kent, handle with care, 1967
& Chevrolet newspaper ad, 1966

Weโ€™re celebrating Corita Art Centerโ€™s new home by sharing some of our latest Corita arrivals. This piece borrowed an advertising catchphrase and gave it a new (religious) meaning by enlarging and distorting the headline for a screen print.

#SisterCorita #CoritaKent #ScreenPrint #Typography #WomenDesigners #WomenArtists #WomensHistoryMonth

Print with green, red-orange, and orange ink. โ€œHANDLE WITH CAREโ€ in a bold stencil type style is in the center of a circle, with โ€œSEE THE MAN WHO CAN SAVE YOU THE MOSTโ€ in a distorted sans serif overprinted on top.

At the left, in handwriting is โ€œNo time or else a life walking in the dark i met Christ Jesus my heart flopped over and lay still while he passed as close as I'm to you yes closer made of nothing except loneliness. e.e.c.โ€Black-and-white reproduction of a newspaper ad with the headline, โ€œSEE THE MAN WHO CAN SAVE YOU THE MOST: YOUR CHEVROLET DEALERโ€ and some ad copy above a photograph of four cars.

Elaine Lustig Cohen (1927โ€“2016), catalog cover for the Holt, Reinhart and Winston, Inc. publishing company, 1965.

Lustig Cohenโ€™s design career began quite unexpectedly. In 1955 her husband, Alvin Lustig, passed away. At 28 years old and with no formal training, she took on the clients and projects that her husband left behind. She soon established herself as one of the leading designers of the 1950s.

Selection 3. Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand; Chaise Longue ร  Rรฉglage Continu; 1928

The 1929 photograph that illustrates the piece for the NYT article shows off the chair in use to the best advantage and succeeds as a work of photography in its own right.

In addition, the photo draws attention to Charlotte Perriand who, as the link below notes, probably deserves more credit than Corbu himself for this design.

This chaise longue also shows how paradoxical modernism can be. In its materials and its ergonomic shape, it breaks decisively with the overstuffed, the chintzy, the historicist; if ever a piece looked like a product of modernity, the LC4 Chaise Longue most definitely does.

Yet at the same time, it is a piece unsuitable for mass production in large quantities, beyond the budget of most, and a challenge for modern apartment dwellers of moderate means: think about the floor space that this seating for one person occupies. In short, it's for millionaires, not the masses.

It was a joy to work on this piece with Anne Galperin. As soon as I saw her essay on Betti Haft in @BriarLevitโ€™s book I knew we had to expand on the search for @letterformarchiveโ€™s blog. (Sadly, nearly all these women were gone before Anne could interview them. Another reminder to talk to elder designers *now*!) letterformarchive.org/news/fro
