I wasn't having much luck with my Stanley #4 when flattening this table top. Out of desperation, I grabbed one of my Japanese planes. I've never had much luck with it in the past even though I tried it several times.

Man, that thing ate through the top and flattened it in no time. I hit it with the Stanley for good measure when I was done.

Spent some time today. Got 2 of the 4 shelves glued up. Will do the other 2 late today or tomorrow.

Didn't get any joinery layout done. Instead, I fitted a dutchman into a tear-out spot on one of the legs. I think I can position that leg on the rear with the patch on the inner side of the shelves.

Two wood shelves in the clamps for a glue up. Woodworking clamp p0rn! The shelves sit on a busy workbench with tools above and tool boxes below. Not so great pix of a dutchman patch clamped into a notch in a shelf leg. The black pad on the yellow clamp hids most of the patch. A blue clamp with a black pad holds a block of wood wrapped in blue tap. The block helps keep the dutchman in position during clamping.

Next steps: add breadboard end and drawbore them in place, as usual. After that get the lap dovetailed stretchers built. I have to figure out how best to pierce the floating shelf to put it on the stretchers. Suggestions welcome (question is less how to make holes but more how to accurately make the such that they match the legs.)

This older Black & Decker jigsaw blade mount confuses me (got the machine from my dad). Just a small metal block with two screws to tighten, no nodge or anything for the blade to be secured in place with. How is it supposed to be held in place with those pull forces? The moment it touched the wood it went flying, as expected.

Very confused how these older machines are supposed to work.

Todays little organizational project. A small door-mounted backsaw till.

There are front, bottom, and side views there. You can probably imagine the saws hanging by their handles in those eight kerfs (more than I need but…)

Definitely not to scale. :)

Spent most of the afternoon working on my Stickley No 670 music stand (shelves) project. Turning expensive quarter-sawn white oak into wood chips...

The legs have been planed to 1 1/2-inches square and the rails, styles, and shelf pieces have been planed to 1/2-inch thick.

Next steps are to start the glue-ups for the 4 shelves and to layout the joinery on the legs.

A collection of quarter sawn white oak lumber, cut to width and planed to the correct thickness, sit atop a workbench. A chop saw is in the background and the hose to a shop vac is in the foreground.

Working on a long, narrow door to cover a narrow closet in our house where we keep sheets for bedding. The closet has a curved top. I’m using parts of a chair I got at a thrift store that perfectly matches this curve and plan to veneer it. We want to allow for air flow so this seems like a good solution. #handtools #woodworking

I finally built myself a simple plane till to get them off a wire and onto my french cleat wall.
How long until this angle stops making me nervous? 😅

Breaking down a sheet of cherry plywood with hand tools isn’t easy, but it’s mostly figuring out how to hold the work in place. #woodworking #handtools

Bonjour bonjour !

Perfect, as far as repairing goes. That slat was 16mm thick. Will do the job.

That repair was easy with a few basic tools: horses for the door, a hand saw to rip the strip, a plane to finish it to width, and clamps. Equally, the saw and plane must be sharp.

All stating the obvious, but until recently I wouldn’t have been able to do this simple job because my saws were dull as baby spoons.

Feels good to advance on restoring the old tools, setting up shop, and getting shit done.

Results. I wouldn’t call this perfect by any measure, but I think it’s really solid. To do better would require many more points and height matching.

Our alternative platform community is thriving, but I'm wondering if we're thinking too small. What if we opened our doors to woodworkers, homelab enthusiasts, crafters, and other makers?
I'm personally diving into woodworking and can't wait to document the journey. Ready to build something bigger together?

The wife asked for a coffee table made from pallet wood. I of course immediately complied and started building. Today i gave it the first coat of finish after sanding for days. Soon dear, soon ☺️
