A superb fairy wren that is spherical and looking at the camera

From today at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. I didn't see any of the larger birds that are supposed to be migrating at the moment, apparently it was a lot busier earlier this week. I did still catch a few pretty birds though.

Caught a quick view of a normally skulky Marsh Wren perched on a pile of rushes, stones, and pieces of a broken fence in the middle of a small stream in May of 2023 - an exciting lifer sighting on my fifth day of retirement.

Carolina wrens are often listed as being shy-not accurate. They are fearless. Pairs bond for life.

When I was young, they were uncommon in Upstate NY. Indeed the range maps still show them not common here but their range is expanding as climate change brings warmer winters to the Northeast.

🌏 Superb fairywren (Malurus cyaneus)

The Superb fairywren is a small bird species endemic to Australia. The males (pictured) exhibit vibrant plumage during the breeding season, characterized by their brilliant blue feathers on the head, upper body, and tail. Their wings and lower body are mostly brown. In contrast, the females have predominantly brown plumage with a patch of blue around the tail base.
