is there one word or easy phrase to describe a profession or a career path where:
a boy leaves school, keen craftsman, starts an apprenticeship, becomes a master saddler - pivots to chandler of equine supplies (as his hands need a change of scene)

creativity
For me, it’s that place where imagination combines with self-expression. It’s the mind nurturing an idea until it’s ready to emerge, then growing it to become more than the original thought.
It’s about vision.
It’s arts & crafts, but it’s also the mind interacting with the real world in a form the senses can detect. So, in the end, it’s self-expression utilizing the imagination to conjure a stimulus for the senses.

journalism
I have no training or schooling in journalism, but there are many aspects of the profession that play a part in my writing, from researching to investigative inquiry.
After all, journalism requires providing facts (or fabricating, or altering), it also can mean uncovering a mystery. Critical thinking should play a part.
*I at last included a journalist character in Talma Loyal’s novel, Deadly Stroll.

Loads. Even when I have things set in places I've lived, I still end up doing loads of checks to make sure I get the details right. Even the Scottish stories in Human Nature needed research. My mental geography of Glasgow for starters is terrible despite living there for 20 years.
But that's the fun for me most of the time. Love a good research rabbit hole.

Complicated. Sadness and joy. Father died when he was eight. Brought up for the next eight years in his uncle's family. Didn't see his loving mother again until he was 16, although they wrote to each other regularly. And his mother's very flawed new husband eventually proved useful in a quite surprising way that shaped the rest of his life.

Thorn Rose's mother was smuggled out of the dragon lands in a crate of onions and garlic to prevent her from becoming a slave, but her mother is obviously an immigrant with an accent and foreign ways despite resembling the majority. Her mother lives in the bad neighborhood because it feels safer. Since her mother has no brother, Thorn has no uncle and was raised by servants. Fathers play no role in the Reluctance Series. Her mother is a grandmother's age, runs a business, and is strict about school and study; that's okay with Thorn because she loves both. What's not okay is her mother thinks boys are a distraction, but is too old to perfectly police a frequently appearing male nuisance. What makes it difficult, and it's because her mother insisted on living in the wrong neighborhood, is it's a daemon consorting with a day angel. Thorn Rose understands her mother's worry and their relationship is tense at times, but Thorn thinks that with Streak at her side they can navigate the prejudice they'll face (like a white girl with a black man in the 1960s) together.
