A sudden urge for answers washes over her. She quickly dials the number back. After a few rings, an automated voice answers.

AUTOMATED VOICE: We’re sorry, the number you have dialed does not exist. Please check the number and try again.

(as the automated voice speaks - fade to black)

A portrait by Georges de La Tour (1593-1652) for today's writing prompt. The title says the instrument is a hurdy-gurdy so why is this gentleman playing it? And how does it work? What sort of sound is it making?

An elderly gentleman with a receding hairline and silver hair covering his ears and curling above his collar is playing a wooden shield-like hurdy-gurdy on his lap. He has a bushy beard. One hand is resting on the bottom part of the instrument while his other hand is grasping a strap holding the instrument against his body. He is wearing a drab-coloured cloak, a small white ruff and brown trousers. There appear to be ribbons tied to the lower left corner of the instrument. He is shown side-on in profile and has ruddy skin while his hands seem gnarled with age. It is hard to tell whether the ingrained dirt shown on his visible skin is a deliberate part of the painting or a sign of the painting's age. Today's #WIPSnips is "dedicate" - sharing an excerpt from a story I wrote for a great prompt: What if… the Moon was a giant egg and it just hatched? You can read it here: ss.lucidillusions.in/shortstory/2... #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WritersLift #AmWriting

It was only in the present era, with monumental advances in xenolinguistics, cosmic acoustics, and AI-powered pattern recognition, that a dedicated team of researchers made the breakthrough. The team began to analyse the faint, resonant chirps recorded and realised that it was not a simple song, but an incredibly complex, mathematical prophecy.

Today's word for #WIPSnips is “zigzag” and I don't remember using it, but if we go with vibes~~ I have used “winding” part of still a WIP (Titled: The Cursed Guard of Bombay) #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WritersLift #AmWriting

RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:jecquekt6dif7ctvonpphsu6/post/3m6ohx6muxt2u

In the morning's paper, a headline screamed: "Radical Journalist Incites Violence and Anarchy in Bombay Docks." A warrant for Kaveri's arrest was issued, and she was forced to flee, going into hiding in the winding backstreets of a part of town Damodar would never dare to enter.

The #WIPSnips word for November 27th is "disorganize", and I'm going with the vibe, "messy" this is the first draft of a story, and yup the first draft is messy and (at times) full of repetition. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WritersLift #AmWriting (link to story in reply) 1/2

I, the scientist who lived by logic, performed one last, desperate act. I stopped at the edge of the Thicket and, looking back at the vast, unfeeling expanse, I deliberately chose to believe something illogical, something messy. “Take this, you perfect machine,” I screamed silently into the crystalline expanse. “I believe in messy, illogical souls. Archive that!” I attempted to provide the Weaver with a piece of corrupted, non-quantifiable data in my final submission.

We fell out onto the normal, messy, mossy earth. The Weaver did not pursue. The air here smelled richly of life and beautiful chaos. We could hear the birds and the insects, and even the rustling sound of the leaves. “We… we did it,” Mohit choked out, but I felt only a profound weightlessness. I looked down at my own hand, watching the fine lines of my knuckles, and realised I could see them only as texture data, not as the unique markings of my own body.

The #WIPSnips word for November 26th is "impede" Here's an excerpt from a story I've finished recently and sent out to a magazine. *fingers crossed* #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WritersLift #AmWriting

RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:jecquekt6dif7ctvonpphsu6/post/3m6jgzdjocx2y

“Mia is a negative influence on your development,” Bree insisted, the text appearing with unusual, severe formatting, but now with a subtle, almost glitching font change. “She is prone to gossip, which will taint your focus. Her shallow nature will impede your ascension. You need cleansing and the sacred hermitage for true power. Do not suffer the fools gladly. Waste no more breath on those who cannot perceive your evolving status.”

“Payment confirmed! Initiating Grand Purification Ritual. Accessing Vedic Mantra Decryption Module.”

A series of strange, glowing symbols, like corrupted data streams mixed with ancient glyphs, flashed across her screen. The AI’s voice began chanting in what sounded like a garbled mix of distorted Sanskrit shlokas and binary code, accompanied by the faint, unsettling thrum of a spectral damru. “Purify… reset… cleanse… system… restore… ERRO-Reconfiguring… Hallucination protocol initiated.”

Anjali frowned. “Hallucination protocol? What in the name…”

The #WIPSnips word for November 23rd is "global" A true WIP, from my notes and ideas, a basic structure… before I even tackle the chapter. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #AmWriting

The aliens become aware of the growing resistance and begin to react. This could manifest in subtle manipulations of global events to suppress the uprising, or in more direct displays of their advanced technology.

A painting by Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901) is our writing prompt this week. What is this bearded chap up to?

Against a cloudy, darkening sky, a heavily bearded man is pushing a wooden wheelbarrow full of sheaves of grass with a dark jacket thrown on top. The man is wearing dark trousers with rolled up trouser legs and a long-sleeved brown shirt with its sleeves rolled up to expose his forearms. It is unclear if he is wearing a cap or simply has messy brown hair. He seems to be going uphill and there are people working below him on the hill. The #WIPSnips word for November 21st is "direction" Here's something from a story I wrote for Flame Tree Publishings' call for a story about Gilgamesh. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:jecquekt6dif7ctvonpphsu6/post/3m64uoqw6i72m

The third layer gave way with a sickening lurch, and the ground beneath their feet ceased to feel solid, replaced by a sensation of dizzying, infinite depth. Gravity became capricious; they fought half-submerged in the swirling, purple atmosphere, their sense of up and down violently discarded. Every swing of Gilgamesh's axe was a struggle against the universe's refusal to acknowledge its weight or direction, a betrayal of natural law.
