How is Signal more "decentral" than Whatsapp? Both are centralized, walled gardens, even if the latter has the greener grass.
The #decentralized equivalent of Whatsapp is #Jabber/#XMPP.

@nerve Hey 🙂 My recommendations are the same as I wrote in my #XMPP guide - https://contrapunctus.codeberg.page/the-quick-and-easy-guide-to-xmpp.html
So...
• Quicksy or Prāv for onboarding non-geeks (Prāv adds message moderation and retraction, but hasn't yet caught up to the Material UI)
• Conversations (my secondary client) if you want reliability and low churn
• Cheogram if you want more features
• Monocles Chat (my main client) if you want Cheogram features + more UI enhancements, at the expense of some bugs and quirks
Hope that helps!
I would use #Jabber/#XMPP for it.
There are many federated public servers:
See https://joinjabber.org/docs/servers/ by @joinjabber or https://providers.xmpp.net/ by @xmpp_providers
Or selfhost, e.g. with #Snikket by @snikket_im.
How are the moderation tools on XMPP side? Can one block whole servers?
@lexfeathers have you considered #deltachat or #xmpp ?

https://delta.chat/en/
They're easy to use and have great encryption. There is also #signal which has groups as well.
Moin,
nein, nein, nein, wir wollen nicht auf Signal umsteigen, das nächste zentralistische, US kontrollierte Jail.
Offene Software, offene Standards, dezentral: ein Bsp. wäre #xmpp.
Converse, the in browser #xmpp client has a new release.

@Arios The Problem is #Windows.
Don't expect the "#DRMflag" to work when it's being used by @signalapp (which in and of itself is problematic for demanding #PII like #PhoneNumbers and shilling a #Shitcoin-#Scam named #MobileCoin!) because like the #API to signal to Windows "I'm an #Antivirus product, disable defender!" this will be abused.
If you are actually concerned re: #privacy you'd yert signal, educate others and use #XMPP+#OMEMO (i.e. @monocles / #monoclesChat & @gajim ) or #PGP/MIME (i.e. @delta / #deltaChat & @thunderbird ) over @torproject / #Tor instead.
Not to mention #Signal falls under #CloudAct, so your privacy there is already nonexistant!
I'm sure, #Jabber will gain even more popularity by boycotting proprietary OSes, such as MS Windows, MacOS and iOS or by disabling features, such as allowing users to make screenshots 🙂
Jokes aside, TTBOMK, Recall can be switched off entirely by the user. Isn't that the better way than changing every single app?
@dangoodin Every other desktop messaging app for #Windows would do well to add this, as #Signal has. And if they don't, they compromise the privacy of all those people who took pains to *not* use Windows (who use said messaging apps, and are contacts with these Windows users). Every alternative operating system - #Linux, #MacOS, #iPadOS, #iOS, etc - where you can run these non-Recall-protected messaging apps... they all get dragged into the privacy quagmire which Windows #Recall creates.
Another idea is for these Messaging apps to discontinue Windows support, thereby cutting off the infected, gangrenous limb, with respect to privacy. For example, #Gajim, the #XMPP client for linux, was recently stating they would release a Windows client for 2.2.0. How about just don't, and call it a day, citing Recall being too "radioactive" to privacy to get anywhere near?
I'm curious: Can web browser tabs make a DRM-insisting Recall-blockage, like Signal does? I use WhatsApp Web. How can WhatsApp Web - in a browser tab - do what Signal does here?
There is a job in #Berlin, related to #renewableEnergy, #embeddedSystems, #Debian, #freeSoftware, #C, #Python, #Django, #JavaScript, and even #XMPP.
