@AmeliasBrain @HyL

Thank you for the #intel!

The decorative lampposts sound lovely, but yeah, not helpful for the problems of heat and #asphalt.

The thing is, that even in advance of #HeatDomes and serial #heatwaves neighbourhoods like mine are unwalkable in the summer from heat alone.

In the winter, the sloped sidewalk concrete that almost-seamlessly joins the asphalt roadway AND lack of routine snow clearance means that street parkers are often parked somewhat on the sidewalk itself.

This is particularly easy to do when the #snowpack on the road is higher than the sidewalk, which is most winters, even ones with relatively little snow.

This narrows the sidewalks to the point that even if cleared, they are not necessarily wide enough to use with #AssistiveDevices such as #rollators and #wheelchairs.

I really want #yegAccessible, year-round!

@reinierl

Please do. ❤️

Esp wrt construction and sidewalks, this nonsense happens ALL the time and it is frankly exhausting to feel as though I am an unremunerated city inspector when I live in the enforced poverty of #AISH.

Allies matter a LOT and you are absolutely right that the area would be impassible, not only for wheelchair users but rollators, many strollers, etc.

@TaiMunro

It's a major reason I use forearm crutches with icepicks on the tips rather than a rollator.

With the crutches and icepicks, I *might* be able to summit a windrow.

With a rollator (and presumably an actual wheelchair, but I don't have one so cannot comment from experience), my journey ends no later than the end of the block. 😡

It's pure crap #UrbanDesign for our winter conditions

Indeed. I had to make a journey to #ualberta this week to drop off books. Now that the Education library (Coutts) is permanently shuttered, the closest is the not-very-accesible-to-get-to Rutherford.

Using my rollator to cross at an unmaintained and deeply broken curbcut, I then had to navigate the crosswalk itself, also missing many cobbles completely making for a dangerous and rough crossing.

We need #yegAccessible now.

Last year they didn't put up signs for my neighbourhood (or if yes, did so with mimimal warning). Last year was the first time I didn't move my car in advance.

Coincidentally, last year as the first time my normal 'parking spot' did NOT become the dumping ground for all the snow plowed further up the street.

My take-away was that unlike prior years, I can better preserve my accessibility by ignoring future postings. 😳😬🙄

Maybe I'm just not all that clever, but for the life of me, I can't imagine how making a live-update map showing City of Edmonton plows (almost) never clearing my neighbourhood is going to make any difference??? 🤔

@GroguTheGreen

I don't know about now, but when Greyhound was still running, I realised it technically *was* possible to get to the Via/Greyhound station via transit, as long as I took the LRT from Clareview to Century Park, caught the ETS bus to the International Airport by Leduc, then took an airporter minibus back to the train/bus station.

Wtaf??!?

@eissyrc

Yes! It's a big problem outside the #yegdt core, too. Previously we had *some* benches in my community but those were removed when ETS nuked our local bus service. 😡

There is now *nowhere* to sit in my residential neighbourhood so yet more reason not to risk starting a walk as I likely will need to sit and rest. 😢

Welcome to the 1,500 minute neighbourbood! 🙄😡

Still no ARC reader for tapping in/out of the (currently) SOLE #accessible University LRT entrance (west side)

Uni east elevators remain non-operational.

Okay, #yeg: the clock is ticking! Finally had a chance to report to 311--and was redirected to ARC customer service--that the currently SOLE #accessible University LRT entrance (west side) does NOT have an ARC reader for tapping in/out.

(Uni east elevators have been down for weeks, leaving only the west.)

Now to see how long it takes to get an ARC reader installed there! ⏱️

Edmonton's insistence on contiguous sidewalks-to-roadways is a key factor in preventing residential areas from remaining #accessible year-round.

Current warm weather melts windrows or snowpack on unplowed streets. Even IF residents cleared their walks thoroughly, the walks become flooded from roadmelt, and then refreeze as a sheet of smooth ice.

Remediating to include boulevards between would reduce/eliminate this.

@sgranigan @cthulku

Exactly. Not only does it mess with drainage, it forms ice dams over the #accessible curb cuts, rendering them useless until everything melts off. 😡

We need #yegAccessible now.

@robyn

In past years I've dutifully moved my vehicle, only to find the city has helpfully piled all the snow from the otherwise-fully-parked-street into the spot I had been in. They never remove this pile, so it stays long into spring.

I'm #ActuallyDisabled and this leaves me unable to bring my car back to an #accessible location.

Once again, we need #yegAccessible … year round!

@bunnysmash @EllenInEdmonton Let's hope so, but I'm afraid my resevoir of hope for this sort of thing is pretty low. 😢

Disability gets in the way of me cycling anymore even for fun (esp also with lack of safe cycling routes), but I find our pedestrian infrastructure is often terrible (or only adequate in summer). Edmonton's infrastructure choices tell me that #ActuallyDisabled people don't matter much, nor do seniors, nor parents with little ones, etc etc.

We need #yegAccessible for all.

Likely Jan Lukaslikelyjanlukas@mstdn.ca
2023-01-13

@bunnysmash @EllenInEdmonton Area-related: Ever try to get to the Greyhound/ViaRail station from Kingsway Ave?

Zero #yegTransit service to/from site.

The sole sidewalk is adjacent to the Blatchford (east) side, stops dead without warning maybe 1/3 of the way down, and *zero* crosswalks to get to the station (west) side of the road, and no sidewalk along the west side at any point regardless.

So many places in our city are not #yegAccessible for anyone not using a car 😡

Likely Jan Lukaslikelyjanlukas@mstdn.ca
2022-12-21

@BrentToderian Look, this sort of thing probably needs a content warning. I am now in terrible pain from bitter laughing at #yeg #yegStreetDesign and the total lack of any boulevard trees or indeed even any boulevards separating cars from pedestrians in much of the residential areas of this city. Makes for utterly terrible pedestrian conditions year round: no shade, no windbreaks, no cover for asphalt roadways. Oh, and crap for #yegAccessible #ActuallyAccessible, too! 😂😬😢
