The #TraitorsGate at the #TowerOfLondon, adorned with red #poppies during the 2014 #artInstallation 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘚𝘸𝘦𝘱𝘵 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘥, which commemorated the centenary of the outbreak of World War I. Each of the 888,246 ceramic red #poppies represented one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the Great War.

This year, a smaller installation of the original poppies was displayed until #ArmisticeDay last week. I had planned to share this #gate last #Doorsday but got sidetracked by that stunning Old World #doorway in Seattle I posted instead. 😅

#FotoVorschlag: (Hoch)Stapelei // (High) stacks (In German, "Hochstapelei" is also an old-fashioned word for swindling, but I suppose today, we're sticking to stacks 😉)

#Art in London, at #GranarySquare near King's Cross, photographed in January 2016. Hungarian design studio #HelloWood created this #sculpture in collaboration with visual artist group Creatmosphere. The 11-metre #artInstallation, titled "Let it snow", aimed to highlight the impact of climate change. After the exhibition, some of the 365 #sledges used were donated to schools. Similar #ChristmasTree installations were built in Budapest and Manchester, with materials later donated or repurposed into objects like benches.

A striking, large-scale outdoor sculpture resembling a towering tree, meticulously constructed from stacked wooden sledges. The sledges are arranged in concentric layers, forming a conical shape that ascends high into the sky. Each sledge is carefully positioned with the curved fronts facing outward, mimicking the branches of a tree and creating a sense of intricate texture and depth. The warm, natural tones of the wooden sledges contrast beautifully with the pale blue sky in the background, enhancing the visual impact of the installation. The sculpture is both whimsical and impressive, transforming everyday winter objects into a captivating work of art.

I took a photo of this, hm, #art installation probably, in 2014 somewhere between #Bingen and Rüdesheim. If anyone knows what it is, I'd love to hear from you, as I couldn't find any clues about what I was looking at.

Edit:
Es ist die Installation "Auto" von Anna Fasshauer // This installation by Anna Fasshauer is called "Auto"

A weathered, white vintage Saab car, parked on a cobblestone surface near a river. The car is heavily loaded with an assortment of luggage, bags, and household items strapped precariously to its roof, including a bag with the word ‘YEAH’ written on it. The items also include a large wicker basket, a rolled-up rug, a wooden chair, and various bags, all secured with ropes. The car appears dusty and well-travelled, with visible rust and wear. In the background, a pink monument or signpost with the word ‘VATERLAND’ is visible, alongside a serene riverside view with trees and buildings in the distance.

#ThrowbackThursday #TBT 9 years ago today, we visited friends who were living in #Zurich at the time. That day, we took the train up #Uetliberg mountain, where Swiss sculptor #BrunoWeber created these interesting #mosaic #lampPosts. They are called "Leuchtende Hirsche" (Illuminated Deer), because why not?

A striking outdoor sculpture by Bruno Weber, depicting a tall, stylised deer with an ornate, multi-branched lamp fixture mounted on its head, resembling antlers. The deer sculpture, painted in a pinkish-red hue, stands prominently in a lush garden setting surrounded by greenery and trees. The lamp fixture features four spherical glass lights, adding a whimsical touch to the artwork. The background includes rocks, grass, and a small signpost, with a clear blue sky overhead.

Aha. // The "Garden of Power", one of the themed gardens in Elbauenpark #Magdeburg. Surprisingly, it doesn't symbolize the simple-minded "German Michel" (a personification of the German people), putting a headless leader on a pedestal. Instead, it represents Magdeburg's historical significance as the "Third Rome" (a nod to Holy Roman Emperor Otto the Great, who made Magdeburg one of his most powerful courts), and the conflict between secular and clerical authority. Mmhmm, if you say so.

A nighttime long shot captures the Hubbrücke bridge over the Elbe river in Magdeburg, Germany. The dark, sturdy iron railway bridge spans the serene water, which perfectly mirrors the vibrant red illuminated text "Vᴏɴ ʜɪᴇʀ ᴀᴜs ɴᴏᴄʜ ᴠɪᴇʟ ᴡᴇɪᴛᴇʀ" (FROM HERE MUCH FURTHER) displayed along the bridge's arch. On the left bank, the distant lights of Magdeburg's city skyline and the distinctive towers of the Magdeburg Cathedral are subtly visible under a dark blue twilight sky. The scene evokes a sense of calm and reflection, highlighting the architectural presence and its illuminated art installation.

#SilentSunday at #Hubbrücke bridge over the #Elbe river in #Magdeburg. This is an art installation by #MaurizioNannucci on both sides of the #bridge.

This lift bridge used to be a railway bridge, but is now for pedestrians only. It doubles as an art installation with many love locks and commemorative plaques that work like a donor wall. I might share some of the plaques at a later point: some are funny, some are sad, some are sweet. Hubbrücke is one of the largest lift bridges in Germany and is a listed monument.

One T is missing now on the blue side. I snapped it a few years ago when all the #lights were working, so here it is in its full glory: https://pixelfed.social/p/meoralis/785928088335299682

A captivating long exposure photograph at dusk showcases a large, dark metal railway bridge, Hubbrücke in Magdeburg, spanning the wide river Elbe. Blue illuminated text on the bridge, "VON SO WEIT BIS HIER HIN", is reflected vibrantly in the still, dark blue water below. A warm, golden light emanates from a structure on the far bank, also reflecting in the water. The sky is a deep twilight blue with visible clouds. The overall scene is serene and dramatic, highlighting the bridge's architecture and the reflections on the water.A breathtaking twilight scene captures the city of Magdeburg across a river, with the sky transitioning from a fiery orange-red near the horizon to deep blue above. The prominent silhouette of Magdeburg Cathedral, with its twin spires, stands tall on the left against the vibrant sky. The same bridge as in the previous image, Hubbrücke, but viewed from the other side, spans the river, adorned with red illuminated text that is clearly reflected in the calm water. The text reads "VON HIER AUS NOCH VIEL WEITER". The city lights twinkle along the riverbank, adding to the picturesque ambiance.

Anguish ... for #SpookySaturday

This #statue by sculptor Heinrich Apel is called "Mother and child". Apel's #art can be found all over #Magdeburg. Another of his works is the quirky bird door handle of the Cathedral which I posted a while ago. You can find this statue in front of #Johanniskirche (St. John's church) in Magdeburg.

Maybe you remember that there was a car attack on Magdeburg's Christmas market last December, killing 6 people and injuring hundreds of others. This happened only a stone's throw from the church, and, as you may see here, there are still flowers, candles, and messages to remember the victims. (I took this photo in April, but they are still there)

A weathered bronze sculpture of a grieving woman clutching a child is positioned in the foreground, with an overall dark and melancholic tone. The woman, with a gaunt face and open mouth, gazes upwards, her body hunched over, seemingly protecting the infant nestled against her. The statue rests on a dark stone base, adorned with a few wilting flowers and a small plaque that reads "Mutter mit Kind" (Mother with Child). The cobblestone ground around the sculpture appears worn, and in the blurred background, old stone structures and steps suggest a historical or solemn setting, possibly a church.

This year, another poppy-based installation, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴, with almost 30,000 ceramic poppies from the original installation, was put in place at the Tower to mark 80 years since VE Day and the end of World War II in Europe. You can visit it until #Armistice Day on 11 November 2025.

(Edit: The last one is a panoramic shot which probably won't be displayed properly in the Pixelfed app, but should be alright on desktop)
