In response the prince handed him a branch of yamabuki and bid him farewell.

The next day the stranger returned and asked why he had been given the flowering branch🫤
Kaneakira explained that just as the kerria rose (blooming in his garden) had no fruit, so he had no raincoats...

In Edo times 'yamabuki-iro' (山吹色) described the colour of gold (and bribery).

There are 2 main types of kerria rose: the five-petalled variety, and the marigold-like 'pleniflora'.

There is a legend that yamabuki (山吹 'kerria rose') first appeared when a traveller dropped a purse of gold coins whilst racing through a valley.

The flowers represent 'luck with money', 'sublimity' and 'royalty'.

Kerria roses (ヤマブキ) once grew in such profusion in the grounds of Matsunoo-taisha that it was known as 'Yamabuki-no-sha' (山吹の社 the 'Shrine of Kerria Roses').

The rather odd genus name 'kerria' comes from William Kerr, who brought yamabuki to a wider audience.
