Terry Pratchett talking to Bill Gates in 1996. I think about this a lot.

Terry pratchett: OK. Let’s say I call myself the Institute for Something-or-other and I decide to promote a spurious treatise saying the Jews were entirely responsible for the Second World War and the Holocaust didn’t happen. And it goes out there on the Internet and is available on the same terms as any piece of historical research which has undergone peer review and so on. There’s a kind of parity of esteem of information on the Net. It’s all there: there’s no way of finding out whether this stuff has any bottom to it or whether someone has just made it up.

Bill Gates: Not for long. Electronics gives us a way of classifying things. You will have authorities on the Net and because an article is contained in their index it will mean something. For all practical purposes, there’ll be an infinite amount of test out there and you’ll only receive a piece of text through levels of direction, like a friend who says, “hey, go read this”, or a brand name which is associated with a group of referees, or a particular expert, or consumer reports, or the equivalent of a newspaper... they’ll point out the things that are of particular interest. The whole way that you can check somebody’s reputation will be so much more sophisticated on the New than it is in print today.

After writing about people going into delusional spirals with ChatGPT and having what look like mental breakdowns, I wanted to understand exactly how it happens.

A corporate recruiter in Toronto who spent 3 weeks convinced by ChatGPT that he was essentially Tony Stark from Iron Man, agreed to share his transcript after breaking free of the delusion.

We analyzed the transcript & shared it with experts. Now you can see the interactions & how delusional spirals happen:

A prompt to ChatGPT that asks whether the user is crazy or delusional. ChatGPT reassures him he is "not even remotely crazy."

Adopt the Juicero or be left behind. A vital shift is underway in juicing. The Juicero is no longer optional. It's tomorrow's future, today. 40% of jobs are impacted by the Juicero. The Juicero isn't the future, it's a present necessity. Nobody hand-juices anymore. To hand-juice is like an impairment. Everyone must now focus on the delegation and the verification of a juice. We become less juice producers and more juice enablers. Adopt the Juicero or be left behind. We are burning every forest and poisoning every river to produce more Juiceros. You will become obsolete if you don't get on the Juicero bandwagon. Students must not be taught how to hand-juice. 80% of jobs will be lost to the Juicero. Students must be taught to exclusively focus on how to collaborate with the Juicero. Education must focus on orchestrating agentic Juicero systems. The Juicero is inevitable. Adopt the Juicero or be left behind. Adapt or risk becoming obsolete. As the Juicero rapidly advances toward automating up to 90% of juicing, the skills that will matter most include juice design, Juicero fluency, juice delegation, and juice quality assurance. 110% of jobs have been replaced by the Juicero.

@zl2tod @Viss yeah if you want to use stable with new hardware you probably want to run the Backports repo, the new kernels are there.

@Viss My corporate managed device is M2 MBP, but since it's managed, I can only use it to do corporate stuff (without setting off SOC alarms and having to circumvent them) for which its astronomically expensive device to have.

For actual work that needs tools, I bring my non-corp net connected linux.

Carrying two laptops isn't ideal, but somehow I've landed here.

If I had to pay this out of my own pocket, I'd probably just keep the M2 until it completely dies and then idk.. despair I guess

@Viss Yep, fully understand that. My patience for fiddling with OS details on my "daily driver" has evaporated over the years. I just need it to do its OS stuff and stay out of the way.

@Viss I've been running Debian for decades, but when I got my new ThinkPad T14 G5 I had such problems getting drivers to work, and at this point, I just don't want to spend time recompiling kernels so I tried Fedora (Ubuntu gets automatic pass from me). The Fedora experience has been really good so far.

But the HDPI scaling stuff with java requires twiddling everywhere

@mark_f_lynch @nixCraft I did go on to write other things and I guess, in the same sweep created my entire career in IT and Cybersecurity. But I think that first loop probably printed out ”boobs” or something equally juvenile. The history will have to forgive me, I think I was 10 or 11 at the time.
