What exactly is the scam here? Does anyone know?

This is the third time I’ve gotten a telegram message out of the blue where someone tries to cold read their way into a conversation.

But now I’m curious how they plan to get money out of people who reply.

(not curious enough to test it myself)

“Feeling determined? Turn any activity into a goal.” Helpful insight from #Daylio.

@cargo you’d need to make a new account and migrate the old name to it, same as if you were changing instances.

@Catwoman69y2k When I’ve asked people why they keep cash in 0-interest checking accounts, the answer I got was that they just didn’t know that high yield savings were a thing, or they thought it would be hard to move money into one.

I’m curious if that’s the case for everyone with big Venmo balances, or if something else is going on.

2025-01-07

I hear that some people keep a lot of money just sitting in their Venmo account?! Y’all ought to transfer that money to a bank account that pays interest instead. SoFi, Amex, CIT, and Barclays all pay better than 4% right now. (And they’re ordinary banks with insurance, not fintech.)

‪Jay feathers and blue morpho butterfly wings have structures shaped like millions of tiny prisms splitting light into a million tiny rainbows, but arranged in such a way that only the blue part reflects out. When lit from behind they look brown! ‬

Bluejays’ feathers aren’t pigmented blue; their brilliant colors come from optical interference.

So in their case, it really is just phase.

@tryst I am absolutely not excusing any of those Nazis. But they don’t have a monopoly on harmful outcomes.

On a day-to-day level I experience frequent personal antisemitism from the accelerationist left, and rarely from the far right. Of course this is selection bias; it’s because my social media bubble contains many leftists and no fascists. But it still *happens* and I still see it firsthand. It troubles me to see that condoned.

2024-02-14

@tryst there is more enthusiasm for antisemitic ethnic cleansing on the left than may be evident to someone not attuned to the dog whistles.

@TerrorBite @Tiwy57 hm, when I post another text screenshot, it doesn't auto-hide ... and when I shift+F5 my timeline, all the images come through unhidden. Maybe it was a setting on my profile that got stuck in 'hide images by default' somehow? But it didn't hide any of the other images in my timeline.

Confusing, although unimportant. I'm not offended that it hid that particular image, I'm just scratching my head at why it happened.

2024-02-03

Huh, I wonder why Mastodon decided to auto-hide this image. Is it doing OCR and if so what keyword made it decide this was sensitive?

This is the wildest hallucination I’ve ever seen from #GPT-4.

Screenshot of a ChatGPT response:

“The Hebrew letters " הי״ד " are an acronym for " הלוחמים יהודים דוד ", which means “Jewish Warriors of David”. This is a name for a group of Jewish vigilantes who claim to defend Jews from anti-Semitic attacks, especially in Europe. They use the Punisher logo with the Hebrew letters as their symbol, and they have been involved in several violent incidents”
2024-02-03

For context, הי״ד is actually an acronym for “god will avenge their blood”. It’s what you put on the gravestones of people who died in terrible crimes, or on Holocaust memorials.
It is not, as GPT seems to imagine, the slogan of some kind of rogue Yiddish John Wick Society.

Accidentally opened this site while my mobile phone was still connected to the wifi at work. Now I’m thinking about how IT probably knows everyone’s favorite kinky sites. Gonna feel weird next time I make eye contact with one of them.
