We retired Core Intuition a few months ago, after 16 years. I hope you didn't unsubscribe. coreint.org/2025/06/episode-26

644: You Have to Invert

Impressions of iOS 26, macOS Tahoe, iPadOS 26, and Liquid Glass after a week of using the first developer betas.

Surprisingly, we have thoughts.

Last week, I sat down with Craig Federighi for 30 minutes to talk about the iPad and iPadOS 26.

We covered a lot: the iPad's multitasking journey, being inspired by macOS, handling iPad criticisms over the years and…what is the essence of the iPad in 2025.

I'm proud of this one.

Here's my story: macstories.net/stories/intervi

This aspect was emphasized — and demonstrated — to me in an excellent Xcode/dev tools briefing. You define a struct, you’re guaranteed to get a response in that data structure.

@daringfireball @gruber minor correction but the new chat / agent side window does Not have context of the whole project. Xcode only passes the current file and context it does not give the whole context. Xcode is stuck in 2024.

Thanks to the Fediverse, I will never forget that sharks are older than the north star (which is to say the brightest star that makes up Polaris), and horseshoe crabs are not crabs and are older than horseshoes, horses, and crabs. And sharks.

@caseyliss I'll add that having no agency tends to lead to not caring. The best software engineers are creative thinkers and nothing alienates a creative mind more than being told they are merely the proverbial pen wielded by authors in product, marketing, and design. Not only does thinking of people with coding skills as pens lead to brain drain, it also leads favoring pen like developers when hiring.

(I would also like to see more recognition that you can’t actually save costs by being “conservative” about benefit ratios. The Elizabeth Line in London is used by more than twice as many people as expected, for example. For some reason, this is not being treated as a massive embarrassment , nearly as bad as a 100% cost overrun. Even though it probably points to serious errors in the forecasting process which might have delayed or cancelled extraordinary amounts of necessary investment).

I also wrote up a section focused just on the technology I developed for and used on the trip. Of course being me I had to also turn this into a technology project too!

I built a custom watchOS app which was optimized for battery life, a terrain based speed analyzer to better plan my schedule, and even “vibe coded” a custom tracking website for friends and family to track my progress.

What makes LLMs work isn't deep neural networks or attention mechanisms or vector databases or anything like that.

What makes LLMs work is our tendency to see faces on toast.

Also, I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but I'll say it again:

Part of your job as a senior is to tell your juniors about your fuckups. The embarrassing cringe reckless and lazy bullshit that you did when you were new, and the various times you brought down Prod. We ALL did it sometime. And then tell them: the moment you realized you fucked up, I know, the impulse is to try and cover it up, but don't do it. Come to the seniors you trust, and they'll help you unfuck it, and fight management tooth and claw like mamma and pappa bears to defend you from any shitheads in management. Because that's what our seniors did to us.

641: We're Saving That for the Egg
atp.fm/641

Tiny EV trucks, what Jony and Sam might be making, and how Apple might turn around developer sentiment.

2025-05-30

On the first segment about Apple of Episode 641 of @atpfm @marcoarment separating the jerks from the products, being able to compartmentalise. Understandable and it makes sense, the entire segment made sense. How far can you personally push it? Would you consider Tesla cars again amongst other products of the one who shall not be named? Will you cover advancements in tech by SpaceX?
