@intransitivelie reading some of the journals of Lewis and Clarke helped me get over being an neurotic about English. Those guys spelled the same word three different ways on the same page and didn’t give a hoot. The meaning gets across fine. Add a sillente “e” on the ende of words. It’s fun.

There are 42 states where you can register to vote online, these are the ones where you can't:

Arkansas
Mississippi
Montana
New Hampshire
North Dakota
South Dakota
Texas
Wyoming

If you've seen websites suggesting that you can register online in those states, that is a voter suppression technique, specifically targeting younger voters who are much more likely to vote progressively. If you live in any of these states, make sure you can vote, it usually must be done by mail or in person.

@lzg I’d vote Mississippi area. I live in St Johns and there’s a nice park. SE, NE, NW, could all be cool. Mississippi studios is my favorite place to catch a show. Broder and Proud Mary are my picks for brunch. Maybe pick out what restaurants, coffee shops, venues, and attractions you want to check out and look for something central. It’s easy to pop your bike on the front of a bus or take it on the Max train and street car. You could take a bus across town and bike around a different neighborhood for a day pretty easily. The Trimet website is helpful for planning bus/bike/train combo trips.

@darwinwoodka I agree, but I worry that it’s another one of these situations where the left sees a norm that must be upheld and the right sees an opportunity to create an advantage by being willing to break the norm. The government in GA has made laws to encourage voter disenfranchisement, assuming the left won’t take advantage of them. How about this: a website that uses the same software, but allows voters to check the likelihood that their registration will get a junk challenge. This would let voters check ahead of time and make changes as needed. What worries me is that no one in the swing states seems to be talking about this as much as they should. Checking your registration status and making sure all the information is correct should be a daily talking point for Dems IMO.

@BrianJopek does the left have any plans to use the voter challenge laws in states like Georgia? Apparently groups on the right are using software to identify minor discrepancies in voter rolls, specifically in Democratic-leaning areas. These discrepancies (like leaving out an apartment number or having “Street” in the address rather than “Road”) can be the basis for a vote to be challenged. The plan is to swamp the poll workers with challenges. Voters who are unprepared for this and who aren’t tracking their vote may not even know it has been thrown out on a technicality. However, there’s nothing in the laws that says only Republicans can weaponize them. It sucks that we may be in for a voter disenfranchisement arms race, but if that’s how the game is now played the democrats should probably get to work. I read that six people accounted for the majority of voter challenges in Georgia last year. It wouldn’t take more than a few technically adept folks on the left to level the playing field a bit.

Per the AP, that’s the "same information needed to verify a person’s identity and allow a registration to be canceled."

I find it incredible and utterly bizarre — and so dangerous — that in this day and age, the U.S. makes voter registration data public — for exactly situations like this!
