#52Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Artistic

Genealogist Amy Johnson Crow this week posed the question, "Is there a painter, crafter, quilter, knitter, crocheter, or musician in the family?" My mom, Zenova Cook Hahn, could answer to most of those titles. I'll start with the last; she had piano lessons growing up, and even accompanied one of her friends when she had an appearance on a local TV program in Pensacola, "The Lynn Toney Show." She was also in the high school chorus, or…

DNA Shared Matches Peril

You may know this. I certainly knew this, but it's not something one thinks about until one is faced with the cold hard evidence. Just because a person shows up on your shared match list, it doesn't mean you are related through the same common ancestor. Today, I decided to look at one of my maternal Stephens matches (I have to differentiate, because I have Stephens on both sides).

The Great Pensacola Blizzard of 2025

It was probably Thursday the week before the blizzard that one of my coworkers - I work at at TV station - said that the meteorologist was thinking we might get snow, but he didn't want to say it on the air just yet. The next day, he said it on the air - there's a chance of snow. We'd had snow in Pensacola, Florida, before.

My #NewYear traditions are watching "When Harry Met Sally" so that the final NYE party hits at midnight, then eating my first bowl of black-eyed peas. Just winding down now, so I can get to sleep before too late.

Bowl of black-eyed peas.

Person deep in thought two minutes and one minute before midnight researching on their computer. When midnight strikes they put up some celebratory fireworks while still still researching and return to their computer.

@thedanielsgenealogy I look back at my life, at the age you are now, and I wonder what might have been. What if I had applied to the private college I wanted to attend, but knew I couldn't afford? What if I'd tried harder to find a sponsor for the local TV show I wanted to make? I can't go back, but would I even want to? If I had changed one thing, would I have never met my husband? Life is not a straight path, so we can't see the road ahead; we must just make the best of the journey.

@PostcardsFromParadise Yes, the matches are on Ancestry, cand now you mention it, I have heard the 20cM rule before. Thanks for reminding me. It just seemed so odd to have no shared matches with someone Ancestry was saying should be a 3-4 cousin.

23andMe became next to useless after the hack. I'm glad to see some functionality is returning, just in time for Ancestry to further restrict access to matches. I have a new match, let's call her RM. We share 11cM. It says we have no Shared Matches. However, looking at my mother's DNA matches, she also shares 11cM with RM. Why does my mother not appear as a Shared Match to RM? Why do I not appear as a Shared Match to RM on my mom's results? Is this pushed to a PRO subscription? #genealogy

The FTC found evidence that a US oil exec colluded with OPEC in 2021 and 2022 to cut production and drive up prices.

The price-fixing scam is estimated to have cost Americans an extra $2,100 per year.

When I say corporate greed is driving inflation, this is what I mean.

Remember: The real freeloaders in this country are the rich, not the poor.

The richest 1% evade $163 billion in taxes every year.

The United States literally has a yacht tax deduction.

Just found a best mystery match's sibling on Ancestry, and my research suggests they are half siblings, which confirms our connection on their mother's side. I have a couple I'm now eyeing that could be the answer to one of two brick walls. #Genealogy #Geneadons #GeneticGenealogy #DNA
