"On 15 October 2023, over 800 scholars and practitioners of international law, conflict studies and genocide studies signed a public statement warning of the possibility of genocide being perpetrated by Israeli forces against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Signatories include prominent Holocaust and genocide studies scholars, as well as many international law and TWAIL scholars. The text of the statement and list of signatures (updated on 20 October 2023) is below, and a pdf version can be accessed here."

From the statement: "As scholars and practitioners of international law, conflict studies and genocide studies, we are compelled to sound the alarm about the possibility of the crime of genocide being perpetrated by Israeli forces against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. We do not do so lightly, recognising the weight of this crime, but the gravity of the current situation demands it. "

@EyalL@mastodon.social They try to stay below the outrage threshhold of a majority of global consumers of popular media, which killing 100,000 a day wouldn't achieve. They've claimed for years that Hamas is always mysteriously hiding in hospitals, schools, residential areas and sites supporting critical infrastructure. It's all lies. They even destroyed an office block housing the Al Jazeera and BBC offices. How was that "targeting Hamas"? The Israeli government wants to keep slowly expanding their illegal settlements until there's nothing of Palestine left.

"The pre-existing conditions in the Gaza Strip had already prompted discussions of genocide prior to the current escalation – such as by the National Lawyers Guild in 2014, the Russell Tribunal on Palestine in 2014, and the Center for Constitutional Rights in 2016. Scholars have warned over the years that the siege of Gaza may amount to a “prelude to genocide” or a “slow-motion genocide”."

@vonneudeck@hachyderm.io Right backatcha. There are so many anti-Palestinian tropes in your comment. The revengeful bloodthirsty Arab, the perpetrator of the evil in the world, the idea that it is up to the Palestians to turn the other cheek…

Just to name a few. This isn’t some decent or deserved criticism it is just someone who felt very free to live out their anti-Arab sentiment and an audience that feels happy finally someone is saying what they are feeling.

It’s a shame and terrifying to see.

@scottrichmond@mas.to "The Palestinians" were responsible for an "invasion" of Israel in roughly the same sense as "the Muslims" were responsible for an "invasion" of the United States on September 11th, 2001. The four million innocent civilians killed, maimed or displaced in the Middle East by a US-led coalition of Western governments in the ensuing (and largely bogus) "War on Terror", did not deserve to be bombed back to the Stone Age. Many of them were also victims of Wahabi-Salafist brutality.

If you're looking for people to blame, advocate for finding the actual perpetrators and their enablers, and bringing them to justice. Otherwise you're no better than the terrorists, simply exploiting cultural and ethnic divisions for your own ideological or political gain.

My country
has been subject to a decades-long terrorist bombing campaign by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). While it's true that the British security forces in Northern Ireland, in collusion with the loyalist paramilitaries, murdered hundreds of Republicans, we haven't yet sent war planes into Ireland to flatten Belfast or Dublin - and "the English" don't blame "the Irish" for the actions of a small group of extremists.

Sad news about Matthew Perry, 54 is no age to go.

I read his memoir, not because I was a particular fan of his, but mainly because I worked supporting adults with addiction problems, and so had a professional interest in his story.

Now's not the time for criticism, so I'll just say that he came across as a desperately unhappy person who craved attention and adulation, but seemed to be on the right track to finding some peace and tranquility in his life.

So RIP Mr. Perry, and thanks for all the laughs. Millions will miss you.

Yes, Private Eye is a UK-based satirical magazine. But when it matters, they often stop being funny and start telling it like it is. And in the current climate, this front-page splash was a brave move. 👏🏽

The front cover of the latest edition of Private Eye. It large black-on-white, sans serif font on it reads: "WARNING. This magazine may contain some criticism of the Israeli government and may suggest that killing everyone in Gaza as revenge for Hamas atrocities may not be a good long-term solution to the problems of the region."

@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online @BernieWonIowa@mastodon.social Some of us view crimes against humanity carried out with genocidal intent, as exactly what they are, regardless of how "inflammatory" those observations may be to others. And yes, that does include atrocities carried out by Hamas.

@maxleibman@mastodon.social It's barely true at all. Most people glean value from social media from the networks and communities they build, and the interactions with those networks and communities, as well as what they post themselves. Merely being able to migrate your followers - and not your follows or content, leaving you to rebuild everything else from scratch - is a huge chore for most people, a task that could involve tens or even hundreds of hours of work.

Firefish allows full account portability for most instances, but so long as the flagship server is so unstable, I'm not currently recommending it to anyone.

@dgar@aus.social Grunge is so deceptively difficult to play well, despite being so technically simple that anyone can play the chords. But unless your passion is in the vocal delivery, it just doesn't quite work. It's punk...with soul.

This is why I love Zombie by The Cranberries. Delores totally got that it was all in the voice, and so among the finest grunge tracks of all time was actually written and played by a folk band. Heart-rending.
