@johncarlosbaez every WebBook data entry has a literature reference. Looks like the hydrogen entropy cites CODATA, and the PDF someone has uploaded here (which agrees with the NIST H2 value) specifies 298.15K science.co.il/chemistry/databa

@kjhealy If you have a Muppet voice synthesizer, why limit it to actual Muppet productions? Just make it a Netflix menu option for everything. "subitles: OFF. muppet mode: ON. Daphne Bridgerton: LEW ZEALAND"

CWRU PHYSICS PHD APPLICATIONS are due TODAY

If you are a physics senior and you're panicking over your 12/15 applications being aimed way too high (or way too low) IT'S NOT TOO LATE!

(I am the admissions committee chair! Ask me anything!)

So apparently in 1930 DH Lawrence left his estate to his wife, Frieda the Baroness von Richthofen (!), and in 1956 she split the estate between her three kids by her previous husband (whom he raised after she ran off with Lawrence) and half of it to her stepchildren by her subsequent husband, and as of 1999 it was split twelve ways between grandchildren. So before you make a tasteless meme with your new Lady Chatterley public-domain IP, think of the victims---umpteen nepo Richthofens!

Happy public domain day! Let's all cry a tiny tear for whatever poor nth-generation nepo baby who, up until today, under the laws intended to promote creativity, was able to cash windfall royalty checks for "Lady Chatterley's Lover". No more checks! So sad!

Yes, it would be great if every American city had the transit options of, say, Zurich or Copenhagen.

But that's not happening anytime soon. In the meantime, micromobility and minimobility can bridge the gap -- and will always be part of any healthy city.

But how do you make it so people are actually safe in something that isn't a 2-ton SUV?

You've got to re-engineer streets.

Yes, I used them. I did a ton of due diligence. It didn't work. Those lists were (and still are) tiny compared to the set of people that popped up on BlueSky in the first month.

Also, how is "you become findable by asking the Curator to Add You to the Central List" all that different than "you need an invite to join BlueSky"? Not to mention that it's such a yahoo-dot-com-circa-1997 approach to a problem that every other system on earth solves with search tools.

@UlrikeHahn When I joined Mastodon it was a struggle to find people to follow. (Still is!) When I joined Bluesky it was easy. That's it, 100%.

I took Think[box]'s free TIG welding training yesterday. It was fun! And I was again struck by the contrast between this opportunity, available to 100% of Case students, vs when I was an undergrad and the one and only shop class (which had a HUGE influence on me) had 8 or 10 seats.

@steve The last time I was at SNOLab, part of the underground safety training included this little pocket notepad of Neil George Safety System checklists. "Do an act of safety" and so on. I was trying to explain this to someone but I can't find even a photo of the notepad I remember. Are they still a thing?

Suppose you're a car salesman working on commission. If a customer came in thinking about the 36 MPG Chevy Malibu, but you can talk them into wanting the 16 MPG Tahoe, that earns you, what, an extra $500?

But doing so doubles the CO2 budget of the car, from 45 to 90 tons. Carbon offsets are currently worth something like $30 per tonne.

A reverse-salesman who could talk a Tahoe shopper into accepting a Malibu should be paid $1350 per car from the offsets market. Sell them a hybrid? $2300.
