Dear #academia, as a woman in a male dominated field (compt. biology) I don't need more mentors. When I don't know what to do or want opinions, I have a list of wonderful women and men that I contact for advice.

What I need is champions that will put my name forward when someone ask for an expert, a collaborator on that grant that will get funded for sure or for a conference invite.

That's what privilege gives, and I have some*, but would do with a bit more.

*I promise to give it forward

Ex-farm worker here.

We need to talk about this whole "But a living wage for farm workers would spike the cost of food!" thing.

Not true AT ALL.

Y'all don't understand how fast experienced farm workers are.

The average tomato picker pulls 650lbs per hour.

At $20/hr, that's $0.03/lb for labor.

DYK? Twitter was built as an organizing tool from the start. As one of its first coders, @blaine developed features (like the @ reply!) with and for activists.

Read about how Blaine Cook's focus on pro-social tech drove his journey from 90s activism to building local digital spaces at New_ Public.

I understand that people think their microphone is off when they have muted the microphone in the online meeting. Now, consider that the meeting software reminds you that your sound is muted when you speak.

[”Your microphone is muted.”]

It does this because your sound isn’t really muted… the software ”heard” you. The sound is just not transferred to other participants. But there is of course nothing stopping the software from capturing your sound anyway.

This is one of the reasons I like to have a hardware mute button on the microphone I’m using.

This graphic illustrates a major problem I have making videos:

The last street is still absolute garbage. There isn't even public transit.

The US (⅓ of my audience) is so far behind in city design that this is all they can reasonably hope for.

Meanwhile the rest of my audience is starting from the last street and trying to build something better.

It's like if I had a maths channel and wanted to talk about calculus, but ⅓ of my audience was still debating if multiplication actually works.

Graphic showing four stages of a road design with "a road designed for cars" at the top and "a road designed for people" at the bottom. The final version at the bottom still has ⅔ of the space dedicated to car lanes and parking.

Dearest posters, if you are short of spoons and can't write an alt text, this need not stop you from posting the picture.

We are people with conflicting accessibility needs. You don't have to perfectly meet the needs of others to be allowed to participate.

And if you ask, somebody else might write the alt for you.

"But the plans were on display . . ."
"On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them."
"That's the display department."
"With a torch."
"Ah, well the lights had probably gone."
"So had the stairs."
"But look, you found the notice, didn't you?"
"Yes," said Arthur, "yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying Beware of the Leopard."
