Dear #academia, as a woman in a male dominated field (compt. biology) I don't need more mentors. When I don't know what to do or want opinions, I have a list of wonderful women and men that I contact for advice.
What I need is champions that will put my name forward when someone ask for an expert, a collaborator on that grant that will get funded for sure or for a conference invite.
That's what privilege gives, and I have some*, but would do with a bit more.
*I promise to give it forward
Ex-farm worker here.
We need to talk about this whole "But a living wage for farm workers would spike the cost of food!" thing.
Not true AT ALL.
Y'all don't understand how fast experienced farm workers are.
The average tomato picker pulls 650lbs per hour.
At $20/hr, that's $0.03/lb for labor.
Columbia cancelled my class on race and media. I decided to build my own school instead. 500+ students. And more than 3,100 in the waitlist. Class starts tomorrow. We MOVE✊🏾 karenattiah.substack.com/p/sunday-not...
@JulianOliver @oscarjiminy it looks like kennaook publishes once a month and data goes back to 1976 according to dataset found here: https://www.csiro.au/en/research/natural-environment/atmosphere/latest-greenhouse-gas-data
DYK? Twitter was built as an organizing tool from the start. As one of its first coders, @blaine developed features (like the @ reply!) with and for activists.
Read about how Blaine Cook's focus on pro-social tech drove his journey from 90s activism to building local digital spaces at New_ Public.

@WiGLEnet I cannot shake the feeling there is a fairly interesting story behind this one...
Trump wants to have a tariff war with Brazil?? Bring it on! 🤣

What does the US even produce nowadays?
We can always pirate your software, your movies and your music...
...but good luck doing without our coffee in your breakfast or our steaks in your barbecue 😆
[now back to our regularly scheduled programming]
This graphic illustrates a major problem I have making videos:
The last street is still absolute garbage. There isn't even public transit.
The US (⅓ of my audience) is so far behind in city design that this is all they can reasonably hope for.
Meanwhile the rest of my audience is starting from the last street and trying to build something better.
It's like if I had a maths channel and wanted to talk about calculus, but ⅓ of my audience was still debating if multiplication actually works.
🎤 Do your part to save libraries. Get a library card. Make a donation. Visit their building. Use their online offerings that you can access with a library card. Many libraries offer access to digital subscriptions from home or on-site. Sites like Ancestry and more. 🎤 #SaveLibraries
Keep finding sources of joy. Keep practicing gratitude. And keep speaking up. They want us afraid and feeling hopeless. Don't give it to them.
Dearest posters, if you are short of spoons and can't write an alt text, this need not stop you from posting the picture.
We are people with conflicting accessibility needs. You don't have to perfectly meet the needs of others to be allowed to participate.
And if you ask, somebody else might write the alt for you.
"But the plans were on display . . ."
"On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them."
"That's the display department."
"With a torch."
"Ah, well the lights had probably gone."
"So had the stairs."
"But look, you found the notice, didn't you?"
"Yes," said Arthur, "yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying Beware of the Leopard."
When your local water provider says you’re not allowed to keep your pretty garden flowers alive but billionaire companies can continue consuming whole reservoirs to cool their fucking AI habit, there’s something up with that…
if anybody knows anybody at the UN Umoja (the UN's shared services), get them to patch these boxes for CitrixBleed2 and reset all sessions (including AAA) - there's somebody from Chinese state logged into them going brrr for the past three weeks.
