CoinOfNote

Coin of Note is a personal project to share numismatic information and images of coins and exonumia I enjoy. I try to include interesting information and I hope you enjoy it also!

Participant in #SaturdayNightCoinShow, #MondayMedallion, #TokenTuesday

Please note, I endeavour to identify / describe the pieces I post about in the toot itself. So, for most, I haven't put alt text, just because it would duplicate the same information. If you would like more detail, please let me know!

A wreathed skull stares out from this silver medal for Josias Krijger who died 9 September 1675. Krijger was a lieutenant under Rear Admiral Jan Van Brakel. Behind the skull a pair of scythes and also two putti (one extinguishes a torch and the other blows bubbles - a reminder of the fragility of life). A winged hourglass perches above the skull representing the passage of time (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam) #MementoMori #Netherlands #17thcentury #history #histodons #mourning

An elliptical silver medal decorated with a skull and crossed bones. Behind the skull is a busy scene featuring reminders of death and the shortness of life such as a winged hourglass, bubbles and scythes. The skull on the medal rests on two crossed bones and wears a wreath.

Random #SaturdayNightCoinShow question: Why are American Silver Eagles $80 USD direct from the mint? catalog.usmint.gov/american-ea The spot price of silver is around $22 which is nearly a quarter of that.

And what do you get for a subscription? Looks like one single 1oz bullion coin a year?

Full moon.... The cat accidentally got left in the study with the door shut for a couple of hours last night. She sent a tray of coins off the desk and across the floor. They had been all neatly sorted, ready to file. I definitely should have done that awhile ago...

To make up for the last, hard-to-decipher design. Here is a nice Constantine Follis featuring a well struck, late Roman camp gate. Struck during the ~320s at Cyzicus mint, in modern-day Turkey #SaturdayNightCoinShow

Here's one I picked up just because of the neat shape, even though neither the dealer, nor I knew what it was aside from Indo-Greek. Thanks to David in the Ancient & Medieval coins group on Facebook I have more info. "These are believed to be a local coinage of Taxila in Punjab (northern Pakistan), issued during a period of independence between the fall of the Mauryan empire and the conquest of the region by the Indo-Greeks. cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID= " #SaturdayNightCoinShow

So I've gone with this for now - We had a few amazon boxes lying around, which when opened and cut into "strips" the short edges work fairly well folded in half (for extra thickness). I trimmed the longer edges and got four out of a box. Next up, I'm going to print a sheet of info about the coins to go on either side of these.

This is definitely coin related. The boss got some new fish for our aquarium - a couple of "Silver dollars" (See, I told you it was coin related!) - I definitely approve of the numismatically named fish - even though they will eat the smaller fish (and they don't like being photographed). Pretty sure this still counts for #SaturdayNightCoinShow

A Silver Dollar fish - thin (width) body, but nearly as tall as long, and shiny silver coloured (although almost in silhouette in this photo).

People see me spending money and think I'm rich.

Bro, I'm just irresponsible.

I am a little bit embarrassed - I remembered this last week, and made a mental note to post this piece on the 1st.... and consequently forgot... Oops....

Just over 20 years ago, on the 1st February 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated during re-entry after mission STS-107. In memory, here is a commemorative medallion from the shuttle's STS-52 from October 1992. "Minted within view of KSC launches in Titusville, Florida"

As Commonwealth countries look to replacing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with that of King Charles III on coins & notes, #Australia have confirmed that Charles will NOT replace the Queen on the $5 note. Treasurer Jim Chalmers stated: "The Reserve Bank has decided to update the $5 banknote to feature a new design that honours the culture and history of the First Australians" & "The monarch will still be on the coins"

@dajojo True, that could definitely be an option! More to come as I find a solution :)

Random storage question. I've got a bunch of these large - 76mm x 4mm medallions. I found that beer coaster pockets fit them neatly enough, six to a page. But what can I put between them? I'd like something thicker than the thin cardboard dividers. Help please?

My best thought so far is a full page / sheet protector and cut a piece of sturdy corrugated cardboard box to size. Thick isn't an issue - The medallions are heavy so I don't plan to have too many sheets in a folder.

When I am an emperor or a God, and needing to pose for my coinage portrait, I think this is the look I will go for. Standing regally? No thanks. On a horse? Tempting, but no. Chillaxing on the couch? That's what I got this gig for!

Here's a nice 1950 20 Haléřů from Czechoslovakia. And randomly interesting because the KM number, 20, matches the value. Who else can share a coin with the same KM number as value?

2/2 The name is an abbreviated version of The Afghan Express, a nickname reportedly bestowed in 1923 by one of its crews honouring Afghan camel drivers who arrived in Australia in the late 19th century to help find a way to reach the country's interior. Or possibly it was an insult - full details on the Wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ghan Regardless of the origins, & unreliability of the early partial service, it is a reliable & well-regarded experience today - one I'd like to do one day.

Image of the Ghan, a long silver passenger train headed by two bright red engines with the train's name and an image of a camel on each. The train is winding through a sparse, rocky outback area.
