Institutions, companies, groups and organizations need to recognize that they can host their own social media instances, and thereby own their data and control their presence.

This is difficult for them to grasp, because they are used to depending on a corporate intermediary, and entire industries are devoted to fostering this reliance.

It's like telling a house cat they can be free and opening the door.

Imagine a stranger spreads lies about you. They tell people you're doing horrible depraved crimes. Would you just block them?

What happens when other people don't block them? When other people believe the lies and share them?

What if this turns into real life abuse and violence against you and your family?

This is what vulnerable groups face from bigots. Bigoted accounts need to be shut down, servers which refuse to remove bigots should be defederated.

"Just block them" doesn't work.

@StaticR And those solutions exist, but are crazy expensive and require even more space to use which is an enormous barrier when most folks are stuck in smaller and smaller places.

I used to send a spreadsheet to the Exec Team with "Fuck Off" in the very bottom right hand cell, white text on a white cell. Nearly got caught out when my boss couldn't email it to external auditors, failing the email profanity filter. IT never worked out why it wouldn't send.
