The leading role of the US in NATO and in the world has not been solely because of Americas so called 'Greatness'.
Europe and the rest of the world have granted them this role because of...? I don't know, maybe out of greatfullness after WWII? Or because of the old ties of the early immigrants with the old world?
However it was all built on goodwill, and it's the goodwill that the US had in Europe that is rapidly fading away now.
