Should we let people get infected, so they could develop immunity?
No. That’s the opposite of what medicine does.
We don’t encourage people to get UTIs or cancers to build immunity against future UTIs or cancer.

Welcome, Kristy! Hopefully, we can rebuild the Canadian news media scene here, on Mastodon!

@sebpoule
Sure... but there are a lot of "exceptions" and "no" in QC vs Health Canada. I understand the reason, in principle, but it can aslo be a nuisance. Hopefully, that will change

@GermHunterMD
Thanks for the add!
I’m an ID doc and medical microbiologist with an interest in immunocompromised hosts and a research program in inborn errors of immunity.
Fungi are my faves, but love all OIs.
Looking forward to learning from these toots and 🧵

@sebpoule
Look at those “exception drugs” in Quebec, but nowhere else 😱

To remain in e-touch with clinical and scientific experts in all domains, to learn, and hopefully to share

Looking to start a hashtag on Primary Immunodeficiency disorders, also called Inborn Errors of Immunity
#InbornErrorsOfImmunity
#PIDD

Let’s use these tags to discuss the latest findings in this fantastic field that intersects genetics, immunology, infectious diseases, autoimmunity and malignancy.

We seem to be stuck in an oxymoronic policy loop:
The gov't doesn't want to mandate wearing of masks indoors in public spaces (to protect the health care system for now) b/c they don't think it can be done... Plus, they prefer to leave this to an individual's decision.

Yet, they're full throttle with mandating that people are forbidden to wear kippas and muslim veils and other minority-associated religious symbols in public sector jobs (to protect ?).

If you don't think "it" is systemic....

On Wed Nov 16, the MUHC-Foundation is hosting "MUHC's Got Talent".
Now, there are some VERY talented acts lined up.
BUT.... there is 1 AMAZING one, and that's Billie du Page, who is performing to raise funds for my research program into rare/genetic diseases of the immune system👇

Check us out!
Please vote for Billie & me (just follow the link)
Help us change the trajectory of care

Thank you!

The respiratory viruses are roaring.
What's the big deal? They contribute to an influx of hospitalizations, in a time where we are short-staffed, overloaded (from COVID), and backlogged (compromising testing/treatment of other conditions).

My thoughts, w/ that of colleagues👇

Return of seasonal flu, RSV and other viruses could spell disaster for older Canadians, experts say /via @globeandmail theglobeandmail.com/canada/art

FluWatch: 🇨🇦has crossed 5% positivity rate for flu.
If it's 5% or higher next week, the flu epidemic will be formally declared.

Who have been testing positive for flu?
54% of (+) tests (so far) were in children and teenagers

Get your flu💉

In other words: do these abnormally expressed protein cause Long COVID? Or are they the consequence of another process that causes Long COVID?
More work is needed, but this may point us in the right direction, and highlights the value of translational research & biomarker discovery.

But, this is indeed exciting findings.

2022-11-10

Some of the protein profiles identified are involved in:
Lipid metabolism
Blood coagulation
Does this explain the increased risk of heart attacks and strokes/blood clots after COVID? Possibly.

The authors also correlated certain protein profiles that were associated with subsequently developing Long COVID.
That's exciting!
Does it mean these blood tests PREDICT Long COVID? Not necessarily. The findings would need to be replicated, more work still needs to be done to figure out cause/consequence

2022-11-10

They found that there are derangements in the expression of several proteins in the blood, lasting 6 wks

To the ⬅️ of the red central lines are proteins that are significantly 📉 . To the ➡️ are those that are significantly 📈 .

This is great! And not necessarily surprising/unique to COVID, as post-infection derangements can be seen in other infectious diseases.

However, if we look at WHICH proteins are abnormal, it may give us some insight as to why COVID causes some complications we're seeing
