A Tesla employee who worshipped Musk died in a fiery crash on a road trip in which he relied heavily on Tesla's "full self-driving" system. Tesla never publicly acknowledged his death and quickly replaced him. His widow says she now feels like "we were just guinea pigs."

Really enjoying "True Detective: Night Country." It's got compelling leads w/ complicated personalities & motivations, an immersive setting, and just enough metaphysical/mystical touches to tickle the part of me that wants magic to exist w/o overwhelming a hard-nosed detective story.

This week on Network Break we talk about new products from Juniper, including early moves to integrate AI into its Apstra data center software; VMware customers grappling with higher prices; a weak outlook for Intel and a more positive one for IBM; new SD-WAN gear from Zscaler; and more.

Lots of networking folks are familiar w/ the OSI model, but it's not the only way to think about networks. Russ White uses the "Four Things" model to help him ask questions about networking protocols & solve problems. He describes that model in this post:

Dropped off my youngest at college on Sunday. First thing he did was set up his computer and connect to the Wi-Fi. Godspeed to the WLAN admins--he's your trouble-ticket now. : )

We're trying a new newsletter platform, and the company keeps sending emails w/ cutesy subject lines and weird tricks to try to get me to engage. If you run a company, please don't do stuff like this. Just make a good product and don't bother people.

Look, Clarence Thomas is a thoroughly corrupt person. There is not a shred of doubt anymore.

But just in case you were still uncertain, @ProPublica has gone deep and wide on "his penchant for taking expensive favors from his uber-wealthy and connected patrons that is far more extensive than previously understood.”

I wrote a blog on what I learned about Broadcom's Jericho3-AI ASIC and ways Broadcom is trying (via proprietary mechanisms) to make Ethernet networks better suited for supporting AI workloads. It's all about reducing tail latency, or the time it takes the last frame in a flow to get to a GPU, and why plain old Ethernet needs some tweaks.

Just a reminder that two prominent Federalist Society members wanted to overthrow the government by fraud and then have the government murder you if you objected.

Eat that with your fuckin’ Chick-fil-A sack lunch.

Really interesting presentations from Broadcom on building an Ethernet fabric for AI, but there's also a lot of proprietary technology under the hood to make it happen.

So basically what I'm understanding is that Broadcom's approach to an AI fabric is using a credit (dare I say token) mechanism for a sender to signal when it's ready to receive traffic.

OK, my prediction about Ultra Ethernet are wrong so far. Broadcom is proposing different mechanisms for AI workloads.

Network Field Day 32 is starting now. Want to follow live? Here's the link: techfieldday.com/event/nfd32/

First presenter is Broadcom talking about building Ethernet fabrics for AI workloads. I'm assuming this will be about the new Ultra Ethernet consortium.

Whoa. Sophos researchers just announced that they’ve uncovered 133 malicious drivers signed with legitimate digital certificates, and found 100 of of those 133 drivers were signed by Microsoft.

news.sophos.com/en-us/2023/07/

From the post:

"Today, Microsoft issued Security Advisory ADV230001 as part of their July Windows Update that addresses Sophos’ discovery of more than 100 malicious drivers that had been digitally signed by Microsoft and others, dating as far back as April 2021."

"They also released Knowledge Base article 5029033, which includes new, more detailed information on the technical measures Microsoft has taken to protect against these malicious signed drivers."
