@wumpf @aras Firefox recently added HEVC support btw. FF134 supports it on Windows (might need the Microsoft store h265 codec pack though), 136 mac, and 137 should add Linux support.

@antimnguyen Sony XZ1 compact was peak phone design. Durable plastic back and a slightly raised metal bezel on top and bottom meant you could drop it on concrete without a case without breaking anything. Plus it had a microsd slot, headphone jack, good battery life, and is tiny compared to modern "small" phones like the S24 or Zenfone 9.

Another thing to note is that (at least on Android phones from what I've seen) 5Gbps ports won't be able to output 4k60 if you're using a dock with multiple ports. You'd need a dock that only does display out and power in, and doesn't have extra USB ports/multiple display ports/ethernet/etc.

@lritter @irve No need for that, just read what Nvidia's open source driver does: github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-ker

**(There's a chance that there's some fancy secret stuff happening in firmware, but skimming through that as a non driver dev idk)

@antimnguyen make all the animators jealous of how smooth your animations are by maxing out interpolation on the TV when you're showing them off

@TomF The downside of not buying a kindle is that amazon essentially owns the ebook market, and some books are only distributed on amazon, and they've made stripping the DRM a lot harder in the past year.

@TomF my 8 year old kindle paperwhite still works surprisingly well (browsing through books is laggy, but actually reading them is fine). If your parent is outside the US then I'd probably get a cheap Kobo with a builtin light because Kindles only support Overdrive (what most libraries use for ebooks) in the US.

@knickish @yosh

I heavily disagree on the kensington orbit being great. The sensor it uses can't track the ball at anything above a slow roll, which makes moving the cursor across a 4k monitor immensely frustrating. Combine that with the awful software that changes your windows pointer speed instead of the trackball's DPI makes it unusable.

I do love the scroll ring though.

@feld @briankrebs
Sony doesn't make any of the OLED panels they use in their TVs, they buy them from LG and Samsung like everyone else.

@zeux I wonder if the mac build is using Apple's fancy new linker?

Might be worth testing how long the Linux builds are when using mold?

@aras I managed to brush *half* of my dog.

@psykose @mdx

Something using a modern Intel Atom CPU (Odroid h3/h3+/AliExpress Mini PCs/etc, using Jasper Lake and newer should be able to handle gigabit SQM) will cost a bit more, but will be way less of a headache, especially for router use. Just use Openwrt and configure SQM and you're pretty much set.

@kate As someone who's partially colourblind, please consider removing or reworking the yellow -> green transition colour, as it blends with both of its neighbouring colours too much.
