Frobbotzim

Retired telco night shift TAC supporting DNS, load balancers, yadda, yadda. Haven't yet remembered how not to write in MOP. Yeah, I miss my F5 babies, but the days are still packed. No, I don't really miss Infoblox and yes I do think that Secure64 abandoned a superior OS. Call me crazy.

And thanks to someone for the reminder that I'm more interesting than my job... Which I no longer even possess... Nowadays, I bake, hike, love all doggos unreservedly, help people get to their doctor's appointments, sell records, and try to get through the pile of library books that I shouldn't have taken out all at once.

@atax1a your subtlety was like a stifled sneeze on a distant breeze--nothing I've read discussing his life mentions his passing from the plague (or from cancer or failure to thrive or...), but yeah, your admonition to wear a mask is well-received.

Still, sounds nuts targeting a rando obit for beating on the public health and safety PSA, but wtf do I know? (and saving you from answering that: clearly, sweet fa, so I'll see myself out).

2025-09-05

@atax1a to be fair, it sounds like you've made a profoundly reasonable guess about the 2025 death of an 83 year-old dude.

Kudos, I suppose?

So can you do vague predictions too? I've got a Kennedy in mind, but I'm not looking for a ripe old age in your considered estimation.

2025-09-05

@krypt3ia yeah, he might not be related, but I'm hoping that someday we'll all learn to just tell everyone named Kennedy to go thrive off their trust funds and stop bothering us all forever.

Thank you! I really appreciate hearing your experience, and it sounds ideal, having the harness doing all the work. It'll be just as well when she's off leash on hikes, still wearing harness and tracker.

Our last pup, an undersocialized pointer who always had rabbits on the brain and seemed to float over fences, would have benefitted from 24x7 GPS monitoring, her loss being the original reason we picked up a tracker, and maybe I'll shop around for something smaller if we adopt another like her. But no reason to hang all of my partner's and my own past anxieties around our current hound's neck when she's stuck close to us for 11 years now.

@thisismyglasgow
If you don't mind my asking, do you keep the Tractive tracker on your pup's collar at all times?

We had been using a little Whistle tracker on our golden mix--37 grams, securely attached but easily removed for charging... And with Whistle's purchase by Tractive and the shutdown of their servers, we've ended up with the suggested Tractive Dog XL, and I'm just curious about how other folks work with it.

I'm feeling a bit foolish over fretting about whether hanging an additional 65 grams worth of tracker to Goose's collar will cause her discomfort, but figured it worth asking, with thanks for your thoughts.

Quite legal, and if you haven't been washing up after visiting the mail plant on the way to the break room up to this point, it's a good reminder to start.
Though I've wondered for years about how recognizable the packages from the vendor @briankrebs described would end up being, having considered sending a couple myself, despite having shoveled a bit of the stuff in my time.

@paulasadoorian
Eh, at least a couple of switch techs and their lead are going to be phoning the NOC about that one every three hours to ask when they can normalize the cables (from personal experience).
If it isn't crossing aisles though, maybe three years later you get that one kid in the NOC with undiagnosed OCD and a spreadsheet of MAC's that aren't showing up on the right NIC (also personal experience)...

@da_667 @rx13 Hm. Scripting up a snort rule generator via python skills acquired by studying other folks code while experiencing imposter syndrome is giving my own sense of imposter syndrome a case of imposter syndrome.

(and something that'd have simplified crafting snort rules like that at my last job, oh man, not saying I'd have sold a toe or anything but it'd have been amazing)

(note that the explosion to parallel the one in the climactic scene of ADG will be an extinction level event, but I'm sure that Sean Duffy wouldn't want it any other way)

Nah, it'll be just like the Apple Dumpling Gang. I know this for two reasons. First, the ghost of Don Knotts appeared to me in a dream and revealed it in a brilliant flash of parareality. Second, Sean Duffy from TV's Real World is running NASA.

What a beautiful paragraph.

Magnificent. And the contrasting Miyazaki and Altman quotes left me wanting to hug that hater. Which is certainly not in their job description, but nonetheless...

@paul_ipv6 been thinking a lot about the charts at that link since you'd shared it yesterday. Peak of, what, $68 billion spent in 1965, at the time primarily on the moon shot. Compare to the current $170 bil budgeted for violently abusing immigrants over the next four years.

Straightforward if flip conclusion seems to be that we will not go to the moon today. Nor should there be any reason to bother once we've made this world as inhospitable, which will go faster lacking NASA's attention to earth sciences.

Wish that I could make some more sense of it all, other than that it's just the nation of abusers and enablers we are here and now, implicit or explicit, until and unless some wise soul finds a bloodless solution to the Citizens United version of democracy holding sway at the moment...

Nope, not giving up, just screaming out the stakes. Anyway, apologies for rambling. That'd built up.

@volts.wtf that dog in your profile header? Good pup. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Wandered in from the story about the Charlotte nursing student that you'd shared. Brain feels shattered. Dogs make things better.

@ParadeGrotesque
Well, all I can offer is that Russia is considered a Second World nation, not Third World, according to outdated cold war geopolitical theory... So that'd obviously make Putin's America a Second World nation as well, along with their shift from developed to developing, or maybe just to boned. Third World status might be an improvement at this point, all other things being equal.
