Hall chair, c. 1900
Charles Rohlfs, American, 1853-1936, designer
Workshop of Charles Rohlfs, Buffalo, NY, manufacturer
Oak
This iconic chair demonstrates Rohlfs' mastery as designer and woodworker. The intricately carved, fretted, and sawn-out motifs are varied, confident, and inventive. But while the decorations might at first appear unrestrained, they are ordered within a tight two-dimensional grid.

Tall clock, c. 1907
Charles Rohlfs, American, 1853-1936, designer
Workshop of Charles Rohlfs, Buffalo, NY, (case) manufacturer Elm, oak, veneer, copper, brass, iron, steel
This imaginative cabinet features exaggerated tenon-and-key joints, with elongated keys running up the sides and terminating in carved finials reminiscent of eighteenth-century American tall clocks. The keys pierce three sets of tenons, but the joints are design elements that do not perform a structural function. Their presence seemingly parodies the "structure-as-decoration" ideology of American Arts and Crafts furniture makers.

Poppy windows from the Winton House, Wausau, WI, C. 1905
George Washington Maher, American, 1864-1926, designer
Leaded glass, wood
Created for Charles and Helen Winton's staircase landing, this group of windows features poppies, vines, and leaves meandering within a geometric design. Maher achieved subtle nuances in color and dimensional effects by incorporating different types of glass, including clear crackle for leaves, opaque white for flowers, and granite-textured for buds.

Peacock panel, c. 1928
Gladding, McBean & Company, Los Angeles, CA, manufacturer
Glazed earthenware
The peacock, with its majestic stature and brilliant, eye-catching feathers, was a rich design source for the Arts and Crafts movement. In this panel, the bird's blue and green plumage is set against a background of twisting vines, echoing the shapes of his feathers. The California-based firm Gladding, McBean & Company created this 65-piece tile mural for an exterior wall of a Beverly Hills, CA, home.
